EMELIA ERLAND

FASHION BA (HONS)

From growing up in Wells in Somerset, a crafts-filled area of the UK, Emelia Erland is heavily inspired by traditional crafts as well as sustainability, and is interested in the crossover of science and fashion relating to environmental issues. Her father, an artist, and mother, a botanist working for the Natural Environment Research Council, have also influenced her design work.

Since living in Newcastle, Emelia has become involved in the underground music and art scene and has a passion for cross-disciplinary collaborations. For her final year, she has collaborated with North East illustrator, DJ and Producer, Dove; together creating a politically-themed skirt and her Graduate Fashion Week soundtrack.

Her collection is inspired by developments in sustainable design and describes the narrative of today’s society in its progression towards environmental sustainability – featuring loose kimono-inspired garments and hand crocheted super chunky and jumbo wool yarns. The fabrics have been carefully sourced, with two of the main fabrics being 100% wool due to its natural ability to biodegrade, and the third created from recycled yarns.

While studying at University, she has collaborated on a science x fashion design project with the British Antarctic Survey and designer Andrea Zapp, completed a costume design placement with designer Susan Kuklkarni, and for creative events company Bearded Kitten. Emelia also recently won the Fairtrade x Northumbria T-Shirt competition, designing an image connecting Northumbria to fairtrade values.
