Who is the course for?

This full-time programme is ideal if your academic qualifications meet the requirements for your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course, but your English language level falls below the entry requirements of the academic course you wish to join.

What will I learn?

The programme will provide you with the language and other academic skills necessary for you to gain the maximum benefit from your future academic course. You will develop these skills in a content-based approach to learning involving critical thinking, questioning, discussion, reflection and analysis. You will also develop the ideas and concepts necessary to participate in the global academic community. By the end of the course you will feel confident to research your subject, deal with a range of academic texts, attend lectures, take part in seminars and tutorials, and produce extended written academic assignments.

How long should I expect to study on Pre-sessional English and Study Skills before I can enter my chosen degree programme?

You will usually expect to study for 6 weeks or one semester (11-12 weeks). Expected length of study will depend on your English language level when you apply and the English language level you need to enter your degree programme. The table below shows the length of time you should expect to study on Pre-sessional English and Study Skills before you can achieve the grades required to enter your chosen degree programme.

Please note that these are guidelines only. Progression onto your chosen degree programme is not guaranteed and the rate of progression may differ depending on the student.

Your chosen degree programme English language entry requirements (IELTS equivalent)
   5.5  6.0  6.5  7.0

Your English language level on application (IELTS equivalent)

 5.0  6 weeks  1 Semester
 5.5    6 weeks  1 Semester
 6.0      6 weeks 1 Semester
 6.5        6 weeks

How will I progress?

Progress to the next level or onto your chosen academic course depends on a mix of continuous assessment and end- of-semester examinations (not IELTS).

Accessibility and Student Inclusion

Northumbria University is committed to developing an inclusive, diverse and accessible campus and wider University community and are determined to ensure that opportunities we provide are open to all.

We are proud to work in partnership with AccessAble to provide Detailed Access Guides to our buildings and facilities across our City, Coach Lane and London Campuses. A Detailed Access Guide lets you know what access will be like when you visit somewhere. It looks at the route you will use getting in and what is available inside. All guides have Accessibility Symbols that give you a quick overview of what is available, and photographs to show you what to expect. The guides are produced by trained surveyors who visit our campuses annually to ensure you have trusted and accurate information.

You can use Northumbria’s AccessAble Guides anytime to check the accessibility of a building or facility and to plan your routes and journeys. Search by location, building or accessibility feature to find the information you need.

We are dedicated to helping students who may require additional support during their student journey and offer 1-1 advice and guidance appropriate to individual requirements. If you feel you may need additional support you can find out more about what we offer here where you can also contact us with any questions you may have:
