Academic Departments

Northumbria’s courses are highly rated. In the National Student Survey 2018, a number of programmes achieved 100% satisfaction from our students and almost half scored 90% or more.

We have a strong national and international reputation for academic quality. The Law Department’s Student Law Office was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, the highest form of national recognition open to a UK university. Our Arts Department is one of only 18 in the country to receive funding for a Centre for Doctoral Training over the next five years. Newcastle Business School has earned double accreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for its business and accounting programmes - the first in Europe to gain the double accreditation.

Applied Sciences

The Department of Applied Sciences has an exciting and extensive portfolio of subjects including biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, forensic science, food and nutritional sciences.

Architecture and Built Environment

Architecture and Built Environment encompasses all of our teaching, research and enterprise in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Quantity and Building Surveying, Real Estate and Housing.


From creating fine art to conserving it; from animation to film, theatre and television, through to arts management and teaching, our Arts department is a dynamic and stimulating environment to study a wide range of courses. Learn from world-renowned experts in Fine Art, Performance and Visual Cultures.

Computer and Information Sciences

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences is home to all of our work in artificial intelligence, digital forensics and cyber security, digital networks, social computing, human–computer interaction, games, internet of things, big data and information sciences.

Geography and Environmental Sciences

Geography and Environmental Sciences encompasses all of our work in cold and paleo environments, social and cultural geographies, communities and resilience, environmental geochemistry and health, and ecology, with projects and engagement taking place in more than 30 countries, from the poles to the tropics.


Our Department of Humanities includes the subject areas of History, English Literature, English Language and Linguistics, Creative Writing and American Studies.

Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering

This department encompasses all of our work in mathematics, physics and astrophysics, electrical and electronic engineering, mobile communication, microelectronic, renewable and sustainable energy technologies, and advanced materials.

Mechanical and Construction Engineering

Mechanical and Construction Engineering at Northumbria University encompasses all of our work in Mechanical, Civil, Automotive, Construction and Architectural Engineering, as well as project management.

Newcastle Business School

Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University has a global reputation for delivering some of the best business management education in the UK.

Northumbria Law School

Northumbria Law School is one of the largest law schools in the UK, with a national and international reputation for excellence in legal education for those interested in studying law.

Northumbria School of Design

Our School of Design covers Industrial, Fashion, Communication and Innovation Design. With alumni including Apple’s Sir Jonathan Ive, principal designer of the iPad, iPhone and iMac, our design community examines design in the context of use, beauty and social and cultural contexts.

Nursing, Midwifery & Health

Northumbria University is well-established with highly rated Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health Professional Council (HPC) approved events. Our BSc nursing programmes are ranked 11th in the UK and are accredited by the Royal College of Nursing.


The British Psychological Society has accredited a number of our programmes. We cover psychology and its various specialisms including health, occupational, organisational and sport & exercise psychology.

Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences offers an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Criminology, Sociology, International Relations International Development, Media, Journalism and Mass Communications. Award-winning global research and partnerships will give you the real world experience to drive positive social change on an international level.

Social Work, Education & Community Wellbeing

Within this department we’re ranked top 15 nationally for our education programmes, while over half of our research in Social Work and Social Policy has been rated as world leading or internationally excellent.

Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation

Our physiotherapy programme is rated #3 in the UK (Complete University Guide 2015). We also cover sport & exercise science, strength & conditioning, exercise behaviour, physiology, and sport marketing, management & coaching.
