What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will develop learn about:
• the main causal theories of dyslexia
• how to identify and assess individual pupils with SpLD (dyslexia) using a variety of formal and informal assessment techniques e.g. observation, standardised tests, criterion referenced tests
• how to write reports for other professionals

You will learn through lectures/seminars, group discussion, independent learning and guided practical tasks.

Support will include feedback from the tutor during small-group seminars and individual tutorials.

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate a systematic and critical understanding of the characteristics of SpLD (Dyslexia) and issues associated with assessment and learning
2. Understand and critically appraise the theory and practice of psychometrics
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the legal and professional issues that affect students with dyslexia.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
1. Critically appraise current research in SpLD
(Dyslexia) and its relevance for teaching and
learning.
2. Identify learners with SpLD in the classroom by
assessments based on observation, diagnostic
assessment of attainment and the reports of other
professionals.
3. Demonstrate the skills and knowledge to assess the
cognitive abilities and difficulties of students who fail
to become competent in literacy and/or numeracy
and report appropriately on their needs and the
provision required.
4. Undertake assessments for access arrangements for pupils with SpLD (Dyslexia).

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
1. Communicate effectively with parents and professionals by verbal and written reports as well as to prepare and disseminate critical technical reports for teachers and other professionals which will be demonstrated through their summative assessment tasks as well as teaching and learning activities during the delivery.

How will I be assessed?

Formative:
During the module you will need to digitally record one hour of assessment you have carried out and this will be observed by your tutor.

Summative
The final assessment will be a 5000 word assignment split into two parts:
1. 2,000 word summary of the causal theory of dyslexia following research of relevant literature
MLOs KU1 & 2; IPSA1, PVA 1
2. 3000 words consisting of an in-depth assessment of using both informal and formal assessment techniques. Interpretation and analysis of the findings should lead to recommendations for intervention
MLOs KU2 &3; IPSA1-4; PVA1 & 2.

Feedback:
Feedback for both parts of the above assessment will be written using the elaborated marking scale and the subject specific criteria.

Module abstract

This module will develop your understanding and response to the assessment, teaching and learning of those with dyslexia. You will have the opportunity to critically appraise the theory and practice of psychometrics; identify learners with SpLD in the classroom by assessments based on observation, diagnostic assessment of attainment and the reports of other professionals. You will develop the skills and knowledge to assess the cognitive abilities and difficulties of students who fail to become competent in literacy and/or numeracy and report appropriately on their needs and the provision required.
