Study
You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops. The emphasis is on deepening your understanding of the intricacies of the financial world, considering the needs of each organisation and the different types of financial instruments available before moving on to the essential elements in risk management – credit and market risk, interest rate, liquidity and operational risk.
Following an introduction to key finance theories and principles, a full range of modules covers the financial investment landscape from business and financial analysis and risk, through to investment management, decision making, personal finance and more.
Alongside our teaching, you’ll benefit from a well-designed support system, to help you develop the academic study skills you need. And we make sure that we build extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, into the course. If you’re a non-UK student, you can choose optional sessions to help you develop both your academic language and study skills.
As well as assignments, portfolios and presentations, you’ll also complete an extended piece of work such as a dissertation, management enquiry or consultancy report. And when it comes to assessing your learning, we know that every student has different needs, strengths and topics they’re passionate about – which means your work will always be considered on an individual basis.
Highly acclaimed by clients as successful, as students get to the root of the problem, and results in a detailed report and presentation of their recommendations.
Newcastle Business School has a global reputation for delivering some of the UK’s best business management education. We’re part of an elite group of business schools worldwide with double accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in business and accounting.
Many of our staff are current or former working professionals from the banking, finance and accounting industries – including qualified management and financial accountants. The School’s teaching team is always looking to explore new fields of knowledge and generate ground-breaking concepts and insights.
At Newcastle Business School you’ll experience a first-class education in a world-class environment. From our social spaces and hub areas to lecture theatres and exhibition spaces, our facilities are exceptional. For example, the 24/7 university library achieves some of the highest levels of student satisfaction in the UK and has held the Cabinet Office accreditation for Customer Service Excellence since 2010.
We’re also committed to helping you make the most of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) by embedding it throughout the course. Tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists are there to help you efficiently and thoroughly prepare for seminars and independent research. Lecture capture software means you can review previous lectures online in your time, as well as at your speed.
On the School’s ground floor, you’ll find our innovative Bloomberg Trading Room. It’s where you can put your financial and analytical skills to the test in a simulated trading environment using fully equipped Bloomberg terminals.
What’s more, there are plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice through volunteering, internships and placements. This includes the Business Clinic that enables our students to participate in a ‘consultancy firm’ to provide advice for our region’s businesses.
Find out about our Business Clinic here.
With us, your learning will be influenced and inspired by our teaching team’s active research into their specialist subjects. These include equity financing, systemic risk and consumer credit.
All modules reflect a research-rich approach that will help you become a more critical, reflective and independent thinker. You’ll become skilled in formulating questions, critiquing different interpretations – and developing well-founded arguments. In the final year of the course, you’ll undertake a significant investigation either as a dissertation or consultancy project.
A number of the course’s modules have been specifically developed to meet the academic criteria of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) – making it easier for you to take their exams after graduation.
Our Careers and Employment Service are there to help kick-start your next steps through workshops, one-to-one advice and networking opportunities.
Once you complete your studies, you’ll be ready to pursue career paths across the financial sector – from financial services and banking, to advisory work in finance and insurance both in the UK and around the world. Examples of recent graduate progression from this course include the graduate management trainee scheme at Lloyds Banking Group, an internship at KPMG and banking supervision at the Bank of Russia.
Should you wish to push your knowledge even further, the course also prepares you for postgraduate study – for example, on our MSc in International Finance and Investment, Finance MSc.
Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have strong employability as a Northumbria graduate as every module of Northumbria Business School courses reinforces what you need to succeed. This includes the transferable skills that really matter to employers such as critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to solve problems in sustainable and ethical ways.

The guides are produced by trained surveyors who visit our campuses annually to ensure you have trusted and accurate information.
You can use Northumbria’s AccessAble Guides anytime to check the accessibility of a building or facility and to plan your routes and journeys. Search by location, building or accessibility feature to find the information you need.
