Our Higher and Degree Apprenticeships in Architecture, Civil Engineering and Surveying were developed in close collaboration with our industry partners and professional institutions to meet requirements of the Apprenticeship Standards and the skilled workforce needs across the Built Environment sector.

By accessing levy payments or government funding, employers can enable new recruits and existing employees to gain academic and professional qualification with little extra cost to the organisation and no cost to the Apprentice. The Apprentice must be employed in an appropriate full-time paid role and will spend at least 20% of their normal working hours on off-the-job learning. The programmes are completed within four or five years, plus approximately six months to the end point assessment, which is typically integrated with the process for becoming a chartered professional.

Most learning on our Higher and Degree Apprenticeships will be in the workplace, so employer support is essential. Apprentices will gain a theoretical understanding through live (online or face-to-face) university sessions and online resources such as recorded lectures, videocasts, podcasts, electronic books, journal articles and websites. Apprentices’ involvement in tasks in the workplace enable them to put the theory into context and practice, supplemented by work-based learning such as CPD events, shadowing, mentoring and industry visits. For those programmes with Apprentices across the UK, the university sessions will be mainly online, supplemented with occasional days of face-to-face interaction at Northumbria University or a regional hub.

Northumbria University’s Civil Engineering programmes scored 90% in the 2021 National Student Survey and an overall score of 87% in Complete University Guide 2022. Our Architecture programmes achieved an overall score of 88% and our Building programmes scored an overall score of 96% in the Complete University Guide 2022.

As some of the programmes are newly offered from 2020 or 2021, direct entry into a higher level may not be possible in 2021-22. The Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeships for Building Surveying and Real Estate are available in 2021-22 only for direct entry into a higher level.
