Joaquin Bueno Amaro

Modern Foreign Languages for Primary PGC

Joajuin Bueno AmaroWhere are you from?

Jaén, Spain.

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

I did some research and discovered that Northumbria University was one of the best in languages, and that Newcastle was a city full of things to do and famous for its student life.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

Newcastle is an amazing city. It brims with life 24/7 offering oodles of leisure, from cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions and festivals, to lovely eateries and buzzing pubs and clubs. Both historical sites and delightful natural wonders abound in the region, which assure perfect plans for every weekend. Besides, people are incredibly friendly and warm.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

How close and warm people are. The people from Newcastle and its surroundings break with the aloof and cold stereotype of England. Everyone has been kind, welcoming and warm to me since the first day I arrived.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming?  Was it easy to fit in?

Yes, definitely. Everyone has been very helpful and welcoming, and the Students' Union has organised plenty of events to unite the community.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

Being able to experience a completely different approach to university studies.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

Everyone from the Department of Modern Foreign Languages, especially Mrs Florence Potot, my Erasmus coordinator. She has been an unflagging support, as well as a magnificent token of the North East warmth, and has helped me a lot all throughout my stay at Northumbria University.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

Everyone from the Department of Modern Foreign Languages has been remarkably inspirational. If I had to choose someone, I think Mr Carlos Conde and Mrs Jacky Collins have been role models for me since I discovered how talented and how devoted to their profession they are.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Most probably, the Language Laboratories in the First Floor of Squires Building. I have enjoyed many good times there and have learnt a lot.

What is the best thing about your course?

Networking, meeting people and academics from the field I am interested in.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Discipline grows from within. Do not take anything for granted. Luck is earned.

What do you want to do in the future?  What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I have another year more in my degree back in Spain and then I would like to do a Master's Degree on Education, with hopes of becoming an English teacher someday. My experience here has encouraged me to do so and also to discover I am quite fond of translation and interpreting.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement?  What were your most memorable experiences?

I have done some volunteering job as a Language Assistant in a school. It has been my first experience hand in hand with a school, and I have been able to corroborate how satisfying teaching is.

Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips?  If so, please tell us about them.

I have travelled a lot, but not specifically with my course. During my 9-month stay here, I have been to Edinburgh, York, Durham, Tynemouth, Alnwick, Kielder, the Tyne Valley, Belsay, Keswick, Bamburgh Caslte, Holy Island, the Scottish Highlands, London, Brighton and Amsterdam.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Make the most of it. Venture to the many places you can visit near Newcastle and be up-to-date with all the events happening in the town so you do not miss any of them.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I have had a relevant personal growth. The experience has broadened my mind and made me aware of both the good and the bad things I have back home.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Possibilities, closeness and fun.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

Definitely.
