Interior Design BA (Hons)

What's it like to study at Northumbria?

Studying at Northumbria is very fulfilling. My course challenges me, but because I enjoy it, it's an exciting challenge and the studio sessions with tutors are really useful. I am never bored, as there's always something to do, whether that's working out in the gym on campus, studying in the library, going to a society session, training with Northumbria gymnastics or just chilling in Habita.

Best thing about studying Interior Design

The best thing about studying interior design is being given interesting and well thought out briefs that we then work on and develop with the help of the tutors, who are knowledgeable, experienced and there to support us. We regularly have one to one sessions that reassure me and help me feel that I am on the right track. In the end I am proud of the work I produce.

Favourite thing to do on campus / community

My favourite thing to do on campus is to go to the gym in Sport Central and then go to Habita afterwards and get some food with a friend. I love the burritos and getting to request songs for them to play on the speakers. I definitely feel part of a community.

Course & career goals / industry links

The course will help me achieve my career goals, as I would like to go into interior design or a similar field. The skills I've learnt from this course such as using software such as AutoCAD and Photoshop will be super useful in my future. Next year I am looking forward to either doing a placement year, studying abroad or a mix of both.

A time you realised you were capable of more

Joining the gymnastics sports club and deciding to compete and then winning that competition made me realise that I am capable of more than I thought. Now I am part of the committee, which is something I never thought I would have done before I came to uni.

Support that boosted confidence / ambition

I am currently working on a live brief designing an exhibition for the Centre for Life in Newcastle, which feels like a big project that is going to take a lot of work, but I am excited to explore ideas and challenge myself. Visiting the Centre and being given a tour by the head of development and partnerships, was super useful in getting an idea of what the space was like and how it feels to be an interior designer in the real world going on site visits.

Advice for someone considering Northumbria

Studying at Northumbria is really fun, not only are the courses great, but there are so many sports and societies. I would definitely recommend joining one or more, as it's great opportunity to make friends with similar interests and gives you a break from being constantly focused on uni work. The Students' Union is also great and they have so many things going on all the time, so I would make the most of that, as well as the amazing discounted activities available with Be Part of It.
