PP0426 - Developing Skills and Strategies for Helping

You will attend a series of lectures and seminars to explore the nature of guidance and counselling in different contexts. You will experience a range of learning and teaching strategies, including group activities and experiential learning in the form of practical skills work.
You will be encouraged to be proactive in contributing to an effective learning environment and to undertake peer feedback as part of the formative assessments. Much of the learning on this module will be experiential and you will be supported to reflect upon and develop your own guidance and counselling skills in a supportive environment.

Tutors will support your learning in a variety of ways. They will provide a programme of lectures which relate to the learning outcomes for the module. Seminars will provide a supportive environment in which you can discuss and share your ideas. Tutors will provide reading materials, examples, and activities for seminars to support the development of your understanding and you will also be provided with an electronic reading list which will include essential and recommended reading for the module and its assessment. Contact details for all tutors for this module are available in the module handbook and via the eLP and where appropriate and with your agreement, answers to your queries that would be beneficial to the whole group will be posted on the eLP discussion board so all may benefit.

Summative Assessment (2000 words)
Conduct an introductory interview with a fellow student. Written evaluation of the interview reflecting on the theoretical approaches, skills and strategies applied during the interview. (LOs 1-4)

Formative Assessment:
Small group presentation to reflect on mentoring experience.
Ice breakers.
Reflection and peer feedback on one to one skills work.

This interactive module introduces you to the key concept of guidance and enables you to develop guidance and counselling skills and to explore the nature and application of one to one and group interventions in a range of contexts. Drawing upon counselling theory, you will consider the skills, strategies and models underpinning effective guidance and begin to develop essential guidance and counselling skills.
