Our Alumni - Work For Us
What will I learn on this module?
On this Year 1 semester 2 level 6 module you will explore public health from within your current nursing context. You will come to appreciate that public health may require nurses to work with individuals, families, communities and professionals from a range of disciplines within and outside the health sector. To achieve this you will critically analyse the roles of different professionals so that you understand how this can strengthen your patient-centred care and support your delivery of health improvement projects relevant to your area of practice.
This module aims to develop understanding of fundamental public health concepts as applied to nursing; critical awareness of key public health issues relevant to your context; and consolidate assessment, communication, including solution focused therapy, multi-professional team working, and evaluation skills relevant to nurses.
On this module you will explore the following topic areas:
• Health promotion in Singapore; History and current demographics, Health Policy and the shift from cure to prevention
• The role of nurses in public health
• Research the information you need to describe the health status of your service population and profile their health needs.
• Screening for health promotion
• The importance of multidisciplinary working and the inclusion of the patient and family, to support public health
• The importance of patients, families and carers involvement to support health improvement
• Consider how clinical audit can identify ways of improving services or patient outcomes to improve health.
• The practical application of health promotion approaches, including the consideration of health education and literacy.
• The role of the nurse in advocacy and solution focused therapy in promoting health and wellbeing. This will support people to make healthy choices, reduce health inequalities, and prevent people dying prematurely.
How will I learn on this module?
Varied evidence-based learning and teaching approaches will be used that recognise and support different learning styles: they will include face-to-face, self-managed and electronic learning.
Face-to-face learning will include lectures that will be paired with exploratory seminars. A scenario-based approach will be utilised. For example, personal narratives will be used to develop your understanding of multi-disciplinary team working and different professional roles to enable you to strengthen your patient-centred care. The seminars will develop a range of transferable skills using an enquiry-based learning approach. These skills will include simulation and presentations to develop communication skills and action learning to enhance the exploration of material; sharing perspectives; and working with others.
The module also encourages you to take responsibility for your own learning. Self-managed learning will include private study of indicative reading, use of extensive library provision, enquiry-based learning, and electronic learning.
Blackboard Ultra will provide a range of materials for you to access, including video and audio material, and PowerPoint presentations of the module’s key topics. Scenario-based collaborative exercises will be used to simulate multi-professional working. In addition, the electronic reading lists will highlight to you the texts that will be of use in supporting your journey on this module.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Academic support of your learning will be provided by the module team. The module team will provide support that aims to promote your academic development as an enquiry-based, problem-solving learner. These skills are considered important because they are directly transferable to your role in health promotion. During the module seminars and practical workshops your peers on the programme will also be able to provide you with feedback and support as many of the activities aim to facilitate sharing and discussion with one another.
You will obtain support from direct dialogue with academic staff during lectures and seminars, both online and in country. You will utilise peer support during the directed study and independent study periods on the module. You will also have access to a discussion board on Blackboard Ultra, where you can post questions at any point during the module and beyond. This will be monitored regularly by a member of the module team. A group tutorial to support your summative assessment will be provided. You will have access to Northumbria University’s electronic resources to support the development of academic skills; this is aimed at improving your critical thinking and writing. These resources are aimed at improving your critical thinking, reading, and writing. The resources include e-books, e-journals and an array of databases and media outputs. You will be enrolled on Blackboard Ultra, that will provide access to module teaching materials and a reading list. You will be granted membership of the Northumbria University Library (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/home) that includes a 24/7 service catering for all your learning needs. Library membership will also give you access to academic skills development packages, accessed on-line, called Skills Plus (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/develop-learning-skills/learning-skills ). In addition, you can access Kaplan library and student support services locally.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

By the end of this module you will be able to:
Knowledge & Understanding:

4.

How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment (Not Graded):
An action learning set format will be used, where you will present your initial ideas for a health promotion activity to a small group of peers for 5 minutes and then engage in peer feedback using a coaching model to support critical thinking and reflection, and stimulate discussion. The task will encourage you to apply your knowledge of health literacy, determinants of health, and health promotion strategies while reflecting on the role of nurses and multidisciplinary collaboration.
