Please note: Last entry for this course is September 2023. For 2024 entry, please visit BA (Hons) Business and Entrepreneurship.
Northumbria University's Entrepreneurship course combines a study of entrepreneurial theory with practical learning and problem-solving. You can pursue a pathway with optional research-based modules which explore different aspects of entrepreneurship, or you can follow a business start-up route and create your own company. The aim is to provide you with flexibility and choice.
Following a common first year focusing on building the foundations for entrepreneurship, the second year provides for your choice of pathway, with the student enterprise route giving an optional route to apply your new leadership and management knowledge to establishing and managing your own business. If you prefer a more conventional approach, you can alternatively choose a route with specialist modules.
Between your second and final year, you’re encouraged to extend your horizons with an optional year out. This could be a work placement in an established business or further development of your own start-up (depending on your pathway), or the chance to gain international experience studying abroad.

The course begins with a critical, evidence-based introduction to the ideas, examples and theories from the world of entrepreneurship, alongside broader marketing studies. You’ll cover topics including recognising entrepreneurial opportunities, entrepreneurial management and creativity and innovation.
In the middle of year two the course splits into two pathways. Based on your interests so far, you will chose either Pathway 1 or 2. Pathway 1 is a general entrepreneurship course and offers options on digital enterprise, family business and on key lessons from business failure. Pathway 2 is an enterprise route focusing on your own business start-up.
You’ll learn through seminars, problem-based workshops, case discussions, practical activities, group work and tutorials. To help you develop your independent learning skills, you’ll also complete directed tasks for every module – assignments you undertake in your own time.
Assessments involve applying business principles to solve problems through business reports, presentations and portfolios. In the final year you’ll either write a dissertation or join a team consultancy project for a real-life client. If the optional placement year isn’t for you though, you’ll need to complete a consultancy project to get real-world experience, rather than the dissertation.
We back up all our teaching with well-designed support systems to help you get the most from your opportunities. And we make sure that we build extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, into the course. Throughout your studies, you’ll be able to discuss any academic or personal issues with your Personal Tutor.
Highly acclaimed by clients as successful, as students get to the root of the problem, and results in a detailed report and presentation of their recommendations.

Throughout the course, we take an enquiry-based, problem-solving approach, encouraging you to build research skills such as information literacy, sampling, statistical reporting and surveying. In the final year you’ll undertake a significant investigatory task through either a dissertation or consultancy project.
What’s more, your learning will be shaped directly by the teaching team’s active research into their specialist subjects. This programme is delivered by staff from the Northumbria Centre for Innovation, Regional Transformation and Entrepreneurship and state-of-the-art research in the centre is presented in the specialist options on the programme. Many of our staff are leading researchers in their fields: including rural entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial leadership, business innovation and technology-based start-ups.
Making your career happen is at the heart of our approach – with every module designed to reinforce the transferable skills you’ll need in the workplace. We’ve also introduced dedicated modules on career-development skills: Professional Career Development and Entrepreneurial Management.
Beyond the classroom, you’ll have opportunities to develop further career edge through practical experience and wider learning. In your second year, you can spend a semester studying abroad, or take an extra year before your final year studying elsewhere in the EU, or further afield such as the USA, Australia or China. There’s also our Business Clinic, offering you the chance to work with real clients to help solve their business challenges.
Many of our entrepreneurship graduates have gone on to put their degree into practice by founding their own successful businesses – including premium tea and tea ware brand Y-Tea, award-winning themed tour operator Lundgren Tours and film production company Filmit UK.
The entrepreneurial skills and acumen you’ll gain as part of the course aren’t simply beneficial for starting a business, they’re also highly sought after by employers – particularly for roles in consultancy, sales and marketing. So once you complete your studies, you’ll be in an excellent position to apply for graduate training schemes and graduate roles, or begin building your own business.
Should you wish to push your knowledge even further, the course also prepares you for postgraduate study – for example, on our MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management.
