Northumbria University to welcome Justice of the Supreme Court for public lecture

13th October 2015

Justice of the Supreme Court Lord Hodge is to deliver a public lecture on fraud and its legal consequences at Northumbria University, Newcastle.

The Right Hon Lord Hodge will deliver his lecture, titled The Defence of Commercial Morality: Fraud and its Legal Consequences, at Northumbria Law School on Thursday 12 November 6pm - 7.30pm. Prior to the lecture, Lord Hodge will speak with law students with the hope of developing strong links between the Law School and the Supreme Court.

Lord Hodge - To EmbedLord Hodge was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1983 and appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1996. From 1997 - 2003, he was a part time Law Commissioner at the Scottish Law Commission.

Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court in April 2013, Lord Hodge was the Scottish Judge in Exchequer Causes and one of the Scottish Intellectual Property Judges. He was also a Judge in the Lands Valuation Appeal Court and a Commercial Judge. Lord Hodge joined the Supreme Court in October 2013 as one of the two Scottish Justices.

Dr Michael Stockdale, Director of Northumbria Centre for Evidence and Criminal Justice Studies and Principal Lecturer at Northumbria Law School, said: “Lord Hodge is an extremely welcome visitor not only as the first Justice of the UK Supreme Court to visit us since the Supreme Court was established in 2009 but also as an extremely distinguished legal practitioner and judge in his own right.

“His evening Eldon Lecture will undoubtedly prove fascinating to the audience of students, staff, and members of the legal profession and of the general public whom we anticipate will attend in considerable numbers.

“A particular highlight of the day for our students is that Lord Hodge has expressed his desire to engage with students prior to the lecture. We hope that Lord Hodge’s visit will enable us to develop long term links between Northumbria Law School and the Supreme Court.”

Northumbria University runs a programme of public lectures between September and May each year. The lectures, which are given by leading public figures and prominent scholars, cover a broad range of engaging topics. For further details about the lectures visit: www.northumbria.ac.uk/publiclectures
