Northumbria academic to open Get Carter exclusive screening

Senior Lecturer in Film & Television Studies, Dr James Leggott, will be introducing the iconic Get Carter film on Thursday 26^th June at the Vue Cinema in Trinity Square – the new Gateshead development that is set to house almost 1,000 Northumbria University students from September.

Dr Leggott will discuss the importance of the famous 1971 film that boasted an impressive cast including Michael Caine and North East actor, Alun Armstrong. He will share his views on its cinematic and local significance with the audience – made up of invited guests, members of the community, competition winners and even Get Carter film extras.

Dr Leggott said: “Get Carter is now revered as one of the best British films ever made and it has a particular resonance for the people of Tyneside. There is a sense of gratitude to the film-makers for giving us this gritty social document of the region in a state of transformation, instead of simply a place of violence, corruption and grime. Alongside portrayals of the north-east, such as Billy Elliot, it not only tells the story of the region to ourselves and outsiders, but helps foster a pride in regional identity.”

The new Vue Cinema is one of a number of facilities on site at Trinity Square, giving Northumbria’s new Gateshead student community access to a range of leisure opportunities. The student accommodation itself houses 993 en suite bedrooms, social spaces, a fitness suite, an outdoor running route and stunning views across Newcastle and Gateshead.

Leader of Gateshead Council, Mick Henry, said: “Students bring with them creativity and inspiration. Having almost 1,000 talented students living in the heart of Gateshead will inject something new into the area. We already know from working with dozens of businesses set up by graduates in Gateshead how their innovation can help the borough.

“The real tangible benefits will be felt by local businesses, voluntary and community groups, bars, restaurants and attractions. But I think the whole feel of the area will change for the better too with the vitality and excitement that the students will bring.”
