We want you to have a positive experience when you apply for a role at Northumbria University and would like to give you every chance of showing us why you are suitable for the role. Below you will find some frequently asked questions to help you through our application and selection process.

When you apply

Northumbria University welcome applications from all candidates regardless of nationality however all applicants must meet the requirements laid out by the Home Office to be eligible to work in the UK. For this reason, you will be required to provide evidence of your right to work in the UK if you are invited to attend a selection event.

Yes. If you are applying for an academic role, please include a full list of publications on your CV.

Read the role description and person specification carefully before you submit your application. Use these documents to help you decide if the role is relevant to your personal skills and experience and if it is a good fit for your next career move. Use your covering letter to highlight how your knowledge, skills and experience match the requirements outlined in the role description and person specification.

Be open, honest and share your success.

We will keep your application for six months following appointment of the successful candidate. Where a migrant worker is appointed your application will be kept in accordance with Home Office requirements.

Northumbria University operates a Guaranteed Interview Scheme, which means that if you have a disability and your application demonstrates that you meet the minimum criteria outlined within the role description and person specification, you will be guaranteed an interview for any advertised role.

Please tell us if you require any special adjustment to enable you to apply for a role or attend a selection event at Northumbria University.

You must tell us if you have spent or unspent criminal convictions. In line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, we will not automatically exclude you from the selection process. Whether or not we are able to progress your application will depend upon the role you are applying for and the nature of your offence.

Some roles at Northumbria University require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check; we’ll make this clear in the advert and role description.

If you are invited to a selection event, you may be asked to provide further details of the offence to enable the panel to consider your suitability for the post.

Shortly after the closing date, a panel will assess your application against the person specification for the role and they’ll shortlist the applicants who best meet the criteria for the role. We’ll inform you of the outcome of the shortlisting exercise by email.

The closing date is specified on the advert.

During the recruitment process, applicants are asked to provide some personal details linked to the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics. We know equality monitoring questions linked to these personal details can sometimes seem intrusive but having good quality data enables us to understand our workforce to ensure we can provide an inclusive workplace for everyone. The equality data that is obtained during recruitment does not form part of the information that recruiting managers see. Before the Selection Event

When we invite you for interview, we’ll tell you what will be involved, any specific preparation required and any other information you’ll need to bring with you.

Make sure you’ve had a good look around our website so that you know what we do and why we do it. Take some time to go over your application and think of specific examples that will demonstrate how you are suitable for the role.

On the day of the Selection Event

First impressions count. Give yourself plenty of time to arrive, check that you know where you are going and what time you need to be there. If you are going to be late, please contact us at the earliest opportunity to let us know.

Breathe, relax and be yourself. We understand that most people get nervous during an interview and we want you to do well. Take your time and think before you speak.

Help us to make your interview feel like a conversation, not an interrogation. Ask us some questions. Think about what else you’d like to know about the role, the team you’ll be joining or the University.

After the Selection Event

After the selection event the panel will assess all candidates against the criteria for the role. A member of the selection panel will contact you to let you know whether or not you have been successful. They will provide feedback on request following the outcome of the selection event.

If we make you an offer, this will be subject to satisfactory references and a health check to make sure you are fit for the role. Your Health Questionnaire will be reviewed by an Occupational Health Advisor and you may be asked to attend a medical review appointment.
