Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest mental health and disability Trusts in England employing more than 7,000 staff, serving a population of approximately 1.7 million, providing services across an area totalling 4,800 square miles.  

We work from over 70 sites across Cumbria, Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland. We have a budget of over £380 million.

We also have a number of regional and national specialist services.

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust has a longstanding reputation for providing high quality care within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and through our community setting and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead. We also run a range of services from Blaydon Primary Care Centre.

As well as a full range of local hospital services, we provide breast screening services for Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland, and parts of Durham – and we are the North-Eastern hub for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, covering a population of around seven million people.

Established in 2005, we were one of the first Foundation Trusts in the country and since have consistently achieved the highest levels of care for our patients. As a group we employ around 4,500 staff and currently provide 530 hospital beds across Gateshead. Our primary focus is to provide excellent general health services to our local communities complemented by key specialist areas, including gynaecology, maternity, palliative care, and old age psychiatry.

We provide cutting edge care from some of our state-of-the-art facilities including a £32m Emergency care centre, a £12m Pathology centre of excellence and the beautifully designed Peter Smith surgery centre.

Our maternity services are rated among the very best in the country and our work treating gynaecological cancers has built up a national and international reputation.

We also run the Gateshead Fertility Centre, one of the top ten IVF clinics in the country which has created hundreds of new families in the North-East over the last decade.

Work together with our colleagues as an Integrated Care System (ICS) across the Northeast and Cumbria.

In the annual survey for NHS staff, we consistently rate highly as a place people would recommend others to work. In fact, most of our staff (nearly 80%) said they would recommend working at Gateshead.

We manage hospital and  community health services across Northumberland and  North Tyneside and provide services on a number of sites including the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.  This is the first purpose built hospital of its kind in the country, dedicated to providing emergency care, with emergency care consultants working 24/7 and consultants in a range of specialities working seven days a week.  This enables students to experience extensive and diverse clinical placements offering a wide variety of learning opportunities.

We are consistently recognised as one of the top performing trusts in the country and have twice been  ‘outstanding’ overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).  We are one of the North East’s largest employers, with over 11,000 staff delivering care to over half a million people across Northumberland and North Tyneside in our hospitals, in the community and in people’s homes.

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) was formed on 1 April 2019 following the merger of City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust. We provide acute and community healthcare services to a core population of over 430,000 people living in and around the borough of South Tyneside and the City of Sunderland, as well as thousands of people from Durham who regularly use our services. We also provide a number of community and other services to the Gateshead population. Our Trust also provides a range of specialist services accessed by patients across the whole of the North East and beyond, serving a population of almost 1 million people. Northumbria University works with individual GP practices and with primary care networks to provide community experiences across the North east. This is an opportunity to really understand how health is influenced by environment. We have links to  practices in rural Northumberland, inner city Newcastle and coastal towns.

Public health, long term condition management, acute care, child health and working with families and communities are just some of the learning opportunities and skills which you will achieve during these placements.

At Northumbria University we will plan your placements so that you have learning opportunities in both the NHS and in private and voluntary organisations. Private and voluntary  organisations work  in partnership with the NHS to provide care services.

Our network of nursing homes and hospices are highly rated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and are committed to providing a  positive learning environment for all healthcare students.

Local government placements are very valued areas of learning for students. Excellent learning opportunities are provided by a multiprofessional Health and Social Care Team.

The 0-19 years’ service provides students with a placement rich in Public Health Learning opportunities.

Health Visitors and School Nurses are Specialist Public Health Nurses (SCPHN) who support our students to achieve many learning outcomes.

The Healthy Child programme offers families an evidence based program of interventions such as screening tests, immunisations, developmental reviews and information to support parenting and healthy choices.

Our students are supported by the SCPHN team to provide antenatal information to parents, support early years development and school health. Parents are supported by our students and multiprofessional team to make optimum health and wellbeing choices specified within the Healthy Child Programme.
