PhD in English Literature

I joined the Department of Humanities as a PhD student following an MLitt at the University of Glasgow. I am primarily interested in modernism and feminist/feminine/female texts from the first half of the twentieth century. In my master’s thesis I examined the high modernist works of Virginia Woolf through the lens of contemporary affect studies and post-structural feminism of difference, and my current PhD project is an elaboration of that topic. My PhD is supervised by Dr Julie Taylor and Dr Victoria Bazin. My research is funded by a Northumbria Doctoral Studentship.

As far as difference feminism is concerned, I primarily work on Hélène Cixous’s writings, including both her work from the 1970s and her recent fiction. In terms of affect studies, I focus on that which is considered feminine in the binary oppositions to explore how affect studies per se are concerned with femininity. In short, I am interested in different approaches and representations of femininity in modernism and modernity and how this is related to affective registers.

Apart from modernist writing, I also like contemporary (women’s) writing. And as I also have a background in history, and because I grew up in Estonia, some of my research focuses on nationalism and ethnicity. I am an English literature PGR representative for the faculty.

This is a nomadic institution, founded in 1950 in order to encourage collaboration and promote academic research in Nordic countries. I am also a member of the British Association for Modernist Studies (BAMS).
