MLaw BPTC Nicola Barnes#Where are you from?

United Kingdom

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

I like Newcastle as a city and the course is unique. Not many universities offer the four year exempting degree.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

The city itself is quite small and easy to get around. It's really good for shopping and eating out. I like how there are several parks and the beach is only 10 minutes away!

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

Being a moderately small city, it was easy to fit in as the majority of people were in the same situation. I made friends with my flatmates and course-friends straight away.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

I have enjoyed meeting new people from around the world and making friends I would never have had the opportunity to meet had I not come to Northumbria University. The course has been enjoyable too, having never studied law before I have enjoyed the variety of legal modules available, especially having the opportunity to study the BPTC.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

The friends I have made on my course have helped me the most. It's encouraging having people share the new experiences with you.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

The friends I have made on my course have helped me the most. It's encouraging having people share the new experiences with you.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

My lecturers have inspired me significantly whilst at Northumbria. They provided insight in to the various legal professions and, in sharing their experiences in practice, have helped influence my decision to study the BPTC.

What is your favourite place on campus?

The Student's Union. It's a great place to meet up with friends.

What is the best thing about your course?

Having such a wide variety in MLaw modules and the option to choose the BPTC or LPC in years 3&4 are definitely some of the best things about this course.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I aspire to become a barrister. The modules on the course help develop and refine certain skills that are needed for a career at the bar, such as advocacy and practical legal research.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?

I have undertaken two placements with local firms of solicitors and two mini-pupillages with a set of local chambers. The most memorable experience would be seeing a trial from start to finish on a controversial issue from the bench behind the barrister. Having the opportunity to hear all the evidence put to the court and sit in on meetings with the client was also one of the most insightful experiences.

Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips? If so, please tell us about them.

I travel to London regularly to the Inner Temple for qualifying sessions. This provides an opportunity to meet students from across the country studying the BPTC and professionals which offers invaluable experiences.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Do it! I have no regrets about studying at Northumbria. The city, the course and the people I have met here have all made my university experience memorable.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I have become so much more confident in both myself and my work and I have become much more determined to pursue a career at the bar.
