MSc Disaster Management and Sustainable Development

Eloise Hewitson

What course did you study for your undergraduate degree and why?

BA Hons International Hospitality Management because I like to bring joy into people's lives

Which postgraduate course have you chosen to study at Northumbria and why?

MSc Disaster Management and Sustainable Development because the world is on fire and someone has to do something. I want to help people in an impactful and meaningful way.

What were your reasons for changing direction?

Hospitality requires you to live a toxic lifestyle and luxury is one of the most wasteful and meaningless concepts in the world. I only realised this through working in the industry and looked for a more meaningful way to make a positive difference in the world.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying an entirely new subject for postgraduate study?

Go for it! You need to study/work in an industry you are passionate about and sometimes it takes time to find what exactly that is which is fine. It might feel like some of your coursemates know much more about your subject if they did similar undergraduate degrees but you can make up for this with your passion and dedication.

How is your current course helping to prepare you for employment?

I find my postgraduate degree very interesting and engaging and it has helped me discover what I truly care about in life. It gave me a direction
