Jonathan Bracewell

BA (Hons) Fashion Communication

Why did you choose Northumbria School of Design, and what did you know about us before you applied?

It was recommended by a friend. I knew it had a great reputation for creative study and when I visited during an Open Day, I was immediately sold.

What do you most like about Newcastle, and how do you find the city?

Newcastle is the perfect city for a student. It is big enough to explore lots of different things but small enough to not feel overwhelmed. The creative culture is currently thriving.

Did you find the Design School welcoming?

Extremely. The staff are very friendly and approachable and all the students are in a similar creative mindset.

How do you find your tutors and the staff within the School?

Again, very approachable. The tutors I have worked with have always gone above and beyond to ensure that I am comfortable with my work and progression. It helps that they all have extensive experience in industry.

What are the facilities like?

The Design School has new Macs on every floor as well as around 100 Macbook Pros, which can be used every weekday. The list of interior facilities such as the photo studio and print room are just two of many. The list is endless.

What do you like most about the School of Design?

The interior layout. The open plan of the class rooms allow creative freedom to flow as you are not crammed into a classroom tussling for room.

Tell me a bit about your course?

Fashion Communication is a very demanding yet rewarding discipline. It covers journalism, photography, styling, visual merchandising, art direction, graphic design, PR and videography. It is a course where originality and pushing the boundaries of creativity is encouraged. Personally, I find myself very lucky that I am passionate about my course and it still pushes me to produce my best work and try new ideas. After liaising with industry professionals, it is also a course that is becoming increasingly popular and sought after by prospective employers.

If you had to pick an object to represent your course, what would it be and why?

An advent calendar, as every day is surprising and different.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date during your time with us?

Apart from all academic and design skills, I have learnt to always give 100% in every task I am set because, in industry, there is always someone right behind you waiting for you to under achieve. I have grown greatly in confidence during my time at Northumbria and believe this is down to the course.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Exciting, Rewarding, Fun

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Apply/accept straight away. Northumbria has provided me with a great platform to go forward into industry and the city has provided me with the best three years of my life. I have friends in other universities up and down the country but none seemed to have had close to the amazing experience I have had.

What are your plans now and for the future?

Over the summer, I will be travelling for a while. After that, I am going to move to London in the hope of finding work at a fashion magazine, preferably something like I-D etc. During this time I also want to develop my graphics work and attempt to secure some freelance jobs.
