Gabriella Bryson

BA (Hons) French and Spanish

Where are you from?

Sherborne, Dorset.

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

I had spoken to students already studying here and had heard the course was really good and the year abroad was a great experience.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I love Newcastle and think Tyne and Wear is beautiful. The restaurents are my favourite.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

Everything is relatively cheap which was a welcome surprise for a student!!

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming?  Was it easy to fit in?

Yes.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

My year abroad and the opportunities Northumbria has offered us throughout the 4 years.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

Our tutor Carlos Solares has been very helpfull since 2nd year and has moitivated us all to get the best marks we can.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

The other students within the course have been the most inspiring.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Fusion Cafe! I spent a lot of my time studying on floor 3 of Squires too.

What is the best thing about your course?

The communication module which includes interpreting, translation and essay writing is the best test of language ability which is greatly improved after the year abroad.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Put the work and effort in early and it will pay off later!

What do you want to do in the future?  What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I would like to be a primary school teacher specialising in modern foreign languages. The interperosnal skills gained at northumbria and the confidence students gain here definately would help in any line of work.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement?  What were your most memorable experiences?

I spent my year abroad working as an English Language assistant in Madrid. This was an amazing experience. Passing all the children successfully in their external Trinity exams was most memorable and seeing the children improve their English and become more interested was most rewarding.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Northumbria is worth considering if you want a mix of business and languages whilst touching on broader subjects still. I would say the most useful advice is to get to grips with the admin of the univeristy such as where your undergraduate office is, how to reference work correctly, how to work university software and keep on top of work/syllabus. Once you have those things down the rest falls into place!

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

Definitely more confident, more motivaited and interested in wider range of subjects and a more focused future.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Fun, Inspiring, Opportunities.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

Yes .
