There are a number of ways to get into teaching. As well as our campus taught programmes, Northumbria offers the option of a more school-centred route.
Teacher Training in School PGCE is an exciting opportunity to teacher train in outstanding schools alongside highly experienced teacher mentors. Your School Based Training Plan is designed by the lead school and individually tailored to develop your skills and expertise. Over the course of your training, you will gain experience in more than one school and teach across different year groups within your training age phase.
Applicants are welcomed for Primary, Secondary Subjects and Special School places that our partner schools have been allocated.

Your University-based training follows a blended learning approach where you will be supported by academic tutors as you explore contemporary issues related to education and gain a deeper appreciation of how research and theory inform practice. You will have opportunities to work collaboratively and individually as you are guided to reflect on your school experience and work towards achieving a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (60 credits at Masters level).

On campus you will benefit from our 24/7 library and flexible working spaces, and throughout the course our e-learning platform will allow you to be part of a learning community that professional, collaborative and well informed.
You will be part of an active and inspiring research community. Critical thinking and self-reflection will be central to your understanding of the professional role of a teacher, and your knowledge will be at the forefront of the sector.
If you are training in a secondary subject, you may also be eligible to apply for a bursary of up to £26,000 from the Department of Education.
Applicants should normally have:
A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree. Applicants should have a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) or above in Mathematics, English and a Science subject prior to submitting their application.
Admission is subject to a suitable DBS Enhanced Certificate and a satisfactory health check.
For programmes which begin after April 2020, applicants are no longer required to undertake the professional skills tests in English and Maths, but there remains a requirement for trainee teachers to demonstrate competency in the use of English and Maths in a professional context. Northumbria students will be supported in developing these skills over the course of their programme and their competency assessed before recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
If you are an applicant who has previously been enrolled on an Initial Teacher Training programme please make this clear in your application so that we are able to have a discussion with you about why you were not able to complete that programme.

International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 6 in each component (or approved equivalent*).

This module will support your ability to critically reflect upon how to raise achievement and have high expectations of pupils’ learning. You will autonomously develop your subject knowledge, skills and understanding in order to develop subject learning for their pupils that inspires and motivates pupils to learn and progress all areas of the age phase or subject in which you are training.
You will learn about the key Government priorities, legislation and reports which influence current practice in your age phase or across the education system as a whole and how that shapes the regional and national education agendas. You will be provided with an international perspective to help shape your wider understanding of the role of education. By the end of the module you will have developed your own emerging philosophy of schools, understand their varying contexts and Government priorities.

This module is firmly rooted in your school experience. You will learn a range of professional competencies evidenced within the Teachers’ Standards. Throughout the year, you will acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to become a highly effective teacher in the age phase/subject in which you are training. With the vast majority of time on this programme being spent in school, you will be immersed in the life of your host school(s) your skill development will be supported and monitored through a School Based Training Plan and an Individual Learning & Development Portfolio which are both mapped against the Teachers’ Standards (2012)

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning. Most courses run as planned and as promoted on our website and via our marketing materials, but if there are any substantial changes (as determined by the Competition and Markets Authority) to a course or there is the potential that course may be withdrawn, we will notify all affected applicants as soon as possible with advice and guidance regarding their options.
