DA7012 - Knowledge for Advanced Clinical Practice (Apprenticeship End Point Assessment)

What will I learn on this module?

The purpose of this module is to consolidate your previous learning and support you to demonstrate the achievement of knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the National Standards for the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship for Advanced Clinical Practitioner at Level 7 to meet the EPA requirements of the apprenticeship. Through formative coaching focused on self-development and leadership in your sphere of practice you will draw on relevant philosophical and theoretical underpinnings for Advanced Clinical Practice, including the importance of service users and implementing change in contemporary practice.

How will I learn on this module?

Once transition through gateway is confirmed, you will progress to this EPA module and you will be considered ‘off programme’ and no new learning as taught activities will take place. Once off programme, you will undertake coached sessions and formative activities alongside your own self-directed study to prepare for the two-component assessment of the EPA that allows you to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the advanced clinical practitioner apprenticeship standard.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

As an apprentice, the duration of your programme will be preparing you for this end point. The academic preparation for this module has been provided during the programme, and this will be completed prior to starting the module. This is because preparation for your EPA must be independent (HEE, 2018). This academic preparation will have supported you to understand the requirements of the EPA, thus helping you to prepare for it. As you have transitioned through the gateway as an apprentice you are considered ‘off programme’ there will be no taught contact within the module. Instead, you will undertake coached sessions and formative activities alongside self-directed study to prepare for the assessment of the EPA to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the advanced clinical practitioner apprenticeship standard.
Coaching sessions will continue to support your preparation, and an allocated academic coach provides formative support. The academic responsible for leading the programme also confirms and advises your employing organisation that you have achieved on programme requirements and the University is registered on the Education and Skills Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers and Register of End Point Assessment Organisations.

The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

Formative:

Continuous formative feedback on your progress will be offered throughout your programme of study in addition coaching sessions within the EPA module are designed to prepare apprentices for the final assessment and include an opportunity to present your presentation to your peers for peer review and a mock open book examination.

Summative:

Part 1 – pass/fail (50% of your apprenticeship grade) Apprentices will sit an unseen open book examination of 2 hours duration under invigilated examination conditions. The examination will assess the knowledge, skills and behaviours for Advanced Clinical Practice identified for assessment in the examination

Part 2 – pass/fail (50% of your apprenticeship grade) Overall grades range from pass, fail, merit, distinction.
Both assessment components must achieve a pass in order to pass the apprenticeship. This is a synoptic assessment that demonstrates the Apprentice’s integration of the knowledge, skills and behaviours across the Advanced Clinical Practitioner standard. The sixty-minute assessment is a presentation of practice as a 40-minute presentation (+/- 10%) and 20-minute Q and A (+/- 10%) session. Q and A allows the panel to gain clarification on any aspect of the presentation.

Module abstract

When you study this master’s programme as an apprenticeship, in addition to your degree grade you will be awarded an apprenticeship grade. The apprenticeship grade range includes fail, pass, merit and distinction and this module will provide you with your apprenticeship grade.
If you are studying for a specialist named award, you will be expected to demonstrate that you meet the knowledge, skills and behaviours of an advanced clinical practitioner working in the nationally recognised standard associated with that award. To commence this module, you must meet the criteria to pass through a formal programme gateway that demonstrates readiness to undertake the EPA. This includes current registration with a health or social care organisation, 160 master’s credits through gateway progression, achievement and conformation of workplace ACP standards as met and readiness to progress to End Point Assessment (EPA).

The module focuses on you as an individual and aims to enable you to fulfil the requirements for EPA. The module is focused on combining on programme academic and work-based learning and assessment together. This includes taught content for example, any individual and group learning activities delivered throughout your programme. These will have supported you to identify how the ACP programme modules map into the National Standards for the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship for Advanced Clinical Practitioner at Level 7 and therefore support your achievement of the EPA. This module contributes to the final 20 Level 7 credits required for the master’s degree. Throughout your three year programme you were encouraged to attend support EPA seminars where you had opportunity to understand the requirements of the EPA and prepare for module and gateway requirements. You have 3 months maximum to complete the EPA once through the gateway.
