What makes a system reliable? How do you solve a problem when the information is incomplete? And what happens when the technology you're building outpaces the rules meant to govern it? These are the questions at the centre of The Bridge BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Management Extended Degree.
Starting at foundation level and leading to a full honour’s degree over four years, the course fits around two fixed study days each week, making it possible alongside work and caring responsibilities.
On the course, you'll build real understanding of how digital systems are designed, built and applied, developing the technical thinking that underpins modern technology careers. Academic depth sits alongside practical relevance throughout, so theory is always grounded in genuine problem-solving.
By the end, you'll be ready to act on what you've learned, not just understand it, whether that's stepping into the digital and technology sector or continuing to study.

UK Fee in Year 1: £9,790
The UK tuition fee for 26/27 is £9,790 and is set in line with the UG Government's tuition fee cap. The University may increase this fee in subsequent years in line with any changes to the tuition fee cap. Students will be notified of any increase ahead of it taking effect. The remaining fees relate to the International Soccer Academy and accommodation fees. Accommodation fees may increase in subsequent years. BR3001 -
Professional Development (Core,15 Credits)
This module is centred on your learning and development as a student entering higher education. It seeks to help you become a more effective, independent and confident learner by developing your capacity to understand what you are learning, how you are learning, and to encourage you to monitor, reflect on, evaluate, plan and take responsibility for your own progress. This is a key part of professional development.
In particular, the module aims to:
• Develop good practice as an effective team member both at university and in your future career
• Improve your written and oral communication skills, including negotiation, persuasion and cultural awareness to articulate your strengths, weaknesses, goals and action plan
• Introduce you to the principles of continuous professional development and the professional bodies and codes of practice relevant to your chosen field
• Develop your self and peer-awareness capabilities by undertaking reflective, psychometric and reasoning assessments
This module directly supports the module BR3002 – Successful Team Behaviours by providing the theoretical underpinnings of professional good practice.

Successful Team Behaviours (Core,15 Credits)
This module gives you the opportunity to engage in a team development day where you will take part in a series of managed sessions. This will support team building and bonding at the beginning of the programme but also give you a practical opportunity to work in a dynamic team environment and reflect upon your behaviours. Prior to the development day you will learn about peer assessment techniques and the importance of concepts such as perception, active listening and constructive feedback. You'll have opportunities to practice in class so you can get feedback before the team development day. Attendance at the team development day is required as engagement will be observed for the assessment. To complete the module learning activities, you will:
• explore the key factors underlying collaborative decision-making processes and identify the main challenges to effective team working experiences, including skills in reading circumstances, bias and team intelligence
• examine the importance of recording, reviewing and reflecting on decisions in a team environment, with an aim for continual improvement and performance enhancement grounded in evidence
• evaluate the role and functioning of team working in various challenging contexts, and appreciate the key qualities and personal characteristics of a good team worker

BR3003 -
Legal Ethical and Social Issues (Core,15 Credits)
This module aims to develop your curiosity and interest of legal and ethical decision making, and to help you understand what legal, ethical and social issues means from both an individual and organisational perspective. The module will enable you to develop an awareness of ethical dilemmas which you may face in your future and challenge you to discuss and debate ethical decision-making as a future employer or employee.
This module directly supports the module BR3005/BR3008 – Responsible Business and Responsible Computing by providing the theoretical underpinnings of legal and ethical good practice when faced with a dilemma.
The module further engages you in collecting, reading and reflecting on past business news, events and case studies where ethical dilemmas have been prominent, and will encourage you to use the knowledge you will gain from interactive lectures to contribute to wider discussion and critical debate about ethical issues in business. In particular, this module will support you in developing a strong commercial awareness around ethics in business today, and leave you with the skills needed to foster good ethical understanding needed throughout your degree and future.
At the end of the module, you will also be able to understand and critically discuss the concepts and topics of corporate social responsibility, as well as business’ responsibility towards sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Managing Life at University : Active Research and Academic Skills (Core,30 Credits)
This module introduces you to studying a degree at the Bridge, Northumbria. Over the duration of your first period of study you will develop foundational knowledge, understanding, and practical skills central to being successful at university, in addition to key skills essential for your future career.

Responsible Technology (Core,15 Credits)
Sustainable Development is at the heart of digital and technology. As such this module gives you the opportunity to put your learning of legal and ethical issues from BR3003 into action when faced with a simulated dilemma from the world of digital and tech. You will develop a current understanding of what makes a responsible business and the importance of acting responsibly and ethically, as well as the pitfalls involved in not doing so. You will also learn about the tools and approaches organisations employ to develop responsible business strategy and the models which may be applied to develop a deeper understanding of the impacts, both negative and positive, that business can have on society at large. You will examine the way in which business report their activities and manage their internal and external profiles. In doing so you will develop awareness of the ethical issues involved from the perspective of the individual (manager /agent and stakeholder), of individual firms and of wider society, by combining a rigorous theoretical and a strong applied foundation on the topic.

Exploring the Digital Society (Core,15 Credits)
The aim of the module is to provide you with an opportunity to explore the real world application of information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) within industry and society. You will learn broadly how IT and IS are used in a range of industries but will then focus on a particular industry sector which you choose depending on your personal interests and carry out a more in-depth investigation. You will also learn how technology and systems impact on four key areas of the organisation: business administration; communication; marketing and business/consumer engagement. The ethical use of AI to support your academic studies will also be covered and will prepare you for future use of AI on your other modules.

Problem Solving in a Technology and Programming Context (Core,15 Credits)
This module provides you with the foundations of programming concepts as a way to solve problems computationally. This module is designed to engage you with some practical tasks using programming languages that you may never have used but the aim is to develop your understanding and confidence in how programming languages are used in practice to solve problems. This module provides an understanding of principles of effective management and how managers can create conditions for high performance,. Specifically you will develop your knowledge and understanding of topics including the evolution of management, management as a career path, the competences of an effective manager and how a manager can best organise the workplace, including different organisational cultures, structures, styles, motivation approaches and models of engagement. You will then apply this learning to a live management scenario where you act as a management consultant.

Fundamentals of Computing and AI (Core,15 Credits)
This module aims to provide you with a theoretical and practical foundation required to understand the fundamental underpinnings of a computing system. You will be introduced to the basic concepts and first principles involved in computer software, information representation and the operations and components used in computer system architectures. You will gain an understanding of the underlying theory of computation as well as the major computational and programming paradigms.
This module will also help you develop logical reasoning, computational thinking and problem-solving skills employers look for. An introductory understanding of computer architecture and assembly programming improves your career options in areas such as embedded systems. Practising and developing mathematical skills and problem-solving improves your employability and allows you to develop this area further at later stages of the programme. A broad understanding of the theoretical principles of computing also allows you to extend this understanding into areas of theoretical research. It also allows you to engage with wider discussions in the computing community. The module additionally examines current computational paradigms and principles of design of computer hardware and their environmental impact.

Data Fundamentals (Core,15 Credits)
This module focuses on core data concepts, and the design, implementation and use of database systems. It introduces database systems, the tools for manipulating data in databases, and design principles that ensure data security and integrity. Topics include database management systems architecture, data modelling and database design, query languages, data preparation and cleansing techniques and security, legal and ethical issues concerning the use of databases in society. You will consider issues such as the sustainability of data, and the ethics of responsible data capture and use.
You will work with database systems and data services used in industry. The module follows some of the same topics as the MS Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900) certification course.
Indeed, during ‘Data Fundamentals’ you will work through a series of practcal lab based exercises and engage with research outputs as part of your research-rich learning.
As such ‘Data Fundamentals’ will prepare you for later modules such as ‘Data Mining’ and Data Analyst.

Code Wrangling (Core,15 Credits)
In this module you will develop the knowledge you developed in your first year around computational problem solving and learn how information is created, stored, manipulated, and processed. Using hands-on practical sessions you will be exposed to some of the latest technologies underlying the Internet of things. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data. Using some of the latest educational tools you will begin to paddle in the edges of the ocean of computation.

This module draws together the subject areas of operational effectiveness, excellence and change management/leadership. Change leadership and management is considered both through an organisational and individual lens. As such by the end of this module you will have developed the knowledge and skills in change management essential for management and leadership careers success. Indictive topics covered include:

Leadership and Management in Practice (Core,15 Credits)
This module combines theory and practice to allow you to develop an in-depth understanding about core leadership and management principles and subsequently enabling you to apply these concepts to a range of scenarios. The module also enables you to understand and apply your leadership and management capabilities. This will be achieved through a one day leadership and management development bootcamp where you will be involved in a range of practical activities and deal with complex scenarios which will assist you to explore the practical implementation of leadership concepts and enhance your interpersonal and intrapersonal capabilities through expert feedback and reflective practice.
Therefore, the module emphasises a critical understanding of relevant theoretical perspectives, experiential learning and reflective practices simultaneously to develop and enhance leadership and management capability to deal with contemporary issues faced by organisations.

Project Management in Practice (Core,15 Credits)
From both a practical and theoretical view, you will learn to think about what project management means, the process of project management and how to manage projects by using a number of professional project management methods such as project charters, benefits realisation, work-breakdown structures, and scheduling techniques. Specifically you will learn about:
• Identifying project requirements
• Addressing the various needs and expectations of the relevant social groups as a project is planned and carried out
• Setting and maintaining active communication with relevant social groups
• Sustainable project management and addressing competing project constraints such as scope, quality, schedule, budget, resources and risk.
The module will develop your professional skills and confidence in managing projects which you will then use in your Level 5 Consultancy module.
On completing the module, you will be able to recognise and apply appropriate professional project management techniques. You will have developed a blend of technical skills with reflective, social knowledge to support the theoretical material introduced throughout the module.

Team Consultancy Project (Core,30 Credits)
This module is a practical hands-on application of business principles. It aims to put you – and a group of your peers - into the real-world situation of solving problems for businesses. This will include contacting the client to negotiate, agree and confirm initial project requirements and then working towards a deliverable that is acceptable to the client within the given time frame. This process requires the application and development of several key skills associated with project management and consultancy such as team organisation, working with others, planning and timekeeping. Employers are looking for students with these transferable skills who can adapt and work as individuals and as members of a team in analysing problems and applying effective solutions.
The consultancy projects vary year-on-year; many are organisational or technology-based and, therefore, students are expected to use and develop their own expertise in this area. At the end of the module, each group will be expected to present their findings in report format and to give a formal presentation for the benefit of the tutors and the client. The projects will be supplemented by lectures and seminars introducing the skills required for such consultancy and project management work especially during the first third of the module.

Requirements Engineering (Core,15 Credits)
This module will introduce you to the requirements engineering (RE) process. It provides a foundation knowledge of the key techniques used within requirements engineering to elicit, analyse, and validate what people need out of a system to be designed before it is built, the challenges in applying these techniques well to create requirements specifications, and the way in which the RE process is situated into wider systems development and business analysis lifecycles.
‘Requirements Engineering’ will also prepare you for further modules in your programme involving systems development as well as for your final year project and any consultancy projects you might undertake. Research among industry has shown that skills in requirements engineering are deemed critically needed—not a surprise as most failure in systems development are determined before any design or coding has been done
During ‘Requirements Engineering’ you will also engage in research-rich analysis of requirements engineering topics and learn how to conduct a variety of requirements engineering techniques.

Enterprise Architecture, Cloud and Networks (Core,15 Credits)
The main objective of this module is to provide knowledge of Enterprise Architecture (EA) and specifically how EA is used in organisations. Emphasis is placed on technical and application services available to support business needs.
You will also learn skills to capture requirements from real life organisational structures and transform these digitally while developing skills to deliver a working architecture for an organisation.
Considering the importance of United Nations 17 sustainable development goals (UN, 2021), you will also learn approaches to deliver sustainable Enterprise Architecture.

Information and Cyber Security (Core,15 Credits)
In this module you will learn about the information governance and cyber security principles that underpin the management of an organisation’s information assets. In doing so you will critically analyse the key concepts, theories, standards and frameworks of information governance and security, including risk management. This will enable you to evaluate an organisation’s current approach to information governance and cyber security and to advise on the design and implementation of an appropriate strategy for managing an organisation’s information assets to meet legal, regulatory, organisational and/or societal needs for information governance and cyber security. Whatever sector you choose to work in, strategic success can only occur when there is a culture of continuous learning, creativity and innovation. This is the focus of this module.

Entrepreneurship and Creativity (Core,15 Credits)
This module provides an overview of the mind-set, methods, and activities that support entrepreneurship and innovation. Entrepreneurial actors, whether occurring in an independent, corporate or social context, operate within a unique set of circumstances involving the entrepreneur / team, an opportunity, and the identification and marshalling of key resources needed to capture the opportunity. All of this must be done in the context surrounding the opportunity. As such the module takes an experimental and experiential approach where students develop an applied innovation project including new business ideas/business models whilst critically reflecting upon the relevance of entrepreneurship and innovation upon their career and where relevant to a chosen organisation.

This module will give you a knowledge of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) concepts and how to implement common ML and AI in the workplace

Indeed, employers are seeking talented individuals who can work as members of a team in understanding, analysing, and designing AI and manchine learning solutions leading to sustainable growth, change and impact and applying effective, responsible and ethical AI-enabled techniques.

Individual Project (Core,60 Credits)
This final capstone project gives you the opportunity to apply a wide range of development skills (in specification, design and implementation) in the context of your programme of study which will culmimnate in the your development of a research informed business solution. The solution may be technical, entrepreneurial or may represent a policy or strategy or other organisational instrument appropriate to the business opportunity you have identified. If you prefer you can chose from a live brief provided by a client or agree an opportunity with your project supervisor from your own work or life.
You must demonstrate the ability to conduct research and organise the findings into a comprehensive and explicit structure that is critically assessed and is linked to the conclusions drawn. You will achieve this outcome by investigating an organisational or career related issue and making recommendations for change and improvement that has the potential for strategic improvement.
During the project you will be given exclusive access to the "Bridge Studio" - a specialised study space equipped with the resources required to wok effectively both independently and collaboratively.
Your learning will cover:
• Conducting research in organisations
• The identification of a researchable question.
• Primary research, data collection, questionnaire design, etc.
• Secondary research, literature review, further sources of information.
• The analysis of findings
• Writing recommendations and action plan
• Report writing
• Presentation technique
• Reflection on learning process

You will also develop a career plan to prepare you for taking your learning from The Bridge and moving into higher level skilled employment.

The Bridge is a new route into a Northumbria University degree for adults who don't have the traditional qualifications usually needed to start. You study at foundation level first, then progress onto a full degree - four years in total, with fixed study days each week and a mix of in-person and online learning.

Following the submission of your application, your application will be assessed by our Admissions Team and you will have a follow up call or interview before the outcome of your application is shared with you. If we are able to offer you a place, we will confirm your next steps to enrolment.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning. Most courses run as planned and as promoted on our website and via our marketing materials, but if there are any substantial changes (as determined by the Competition and Markets Authority) to a course or there is the potential that course may be withdrawn, we will notify all affected applicants as soon as possible with advice and guidance regarding their options. It is also important to be aware that optional modules listed on course pages may be subject to change depending on uptake numbers each year.
Contact time is subject to increase or decrease in line with possible restrictions imposed by the government or the University in the interest of maintaining the health and safety and wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors if this is deemed necessary in future.
