What will I learn on this module?

You will develop core skills and understanding of the quantification of complex construction works and of building services and the relationship that these skills have with the establishment of cost models. You will be supported with worked and practice examples of measurement work and the application of the New Rules of Measurement. You will also develop throughout this module numeracy skills relating to the use and evaluation of data and communication skills using accepted industry terminology. Topics will include:
• Basic measurement technique [recapitulation] involving the introduction of computerised measurement software
• The information structure of the New Rules of Measurement
• Complex substructures
• Framed structures
• Drainage
• Building services cost modelling

How will I learn on this module?

The module is delivered via workshop sessions in class involving worked and practice examples involving computerised measurement software. All class materials will be technologically enhanced by animated, narrated slides so that the materials can be studied remotely if required. You will also learn via independent reading outside the workshop sessions.

If you are in employment your workplace will be the main learning environment, in effect acting as a framework for measurement. However, tutor support will be available via drop-in sessions throughout the module study period. If you are in employment it is recognised that there is the need for modes of blended learning delivery, experiential assessment, and opportunities to combine work and study through independent study, embedded learning opportunities, and relevant communications technologies. Lecture capture will be used to elaborate on the content contained in any teaching material along with audio recording and notes to support presentations on key topics.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Advice and guidance is given in class by staff. Written is given on work you submit for assessment.

If you are in employment your workplace will be the main learning environment, however, tutor support will be available via drop-in sessions throughout the module study period. The eLP, telephone and email will be used as a means of communication once the initial briefings have taken place and work-based visits will be made by tutors if appropriate.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

MLO1: You will be able to interpret complex drawings of buildings and convert this pictorial information into quantitative and qualitative measurement information involving computerised measurement software.

MLO2: You will be able to utilise specialist terminology for communicating building and building services measurements.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

MLO3: You will be able to prepare work according to industry standards and procedures and specify and communicate information effectively in a variety of appropriate formats.

MLO4: You will be able to ensure that projects are undertaken in an ethically appropriate manner.

How will I be assessed?

Summative assessment: this module is assessed by one coursework,consisting of measurement exercises according to the New Rules of Measurement and both will assess MLO1-4.

Coursework will be submitted and assessed, and feedback provided to you, online. Electronic feedback will take the form of specific comments on the script and feedback against each assessment criterion accessed via an assessment rubric.

Module abstract

The ability to measure building and building services work, and to communicate measurement information, are the essential skills of the quantity surveyor, which greatly enhance the student’s employability. In this module you will learn techniques of mensuration using computerised measurement software as well as accepted terminology for communicating what has been measured. You will learn how to produce and communicate measurements according to accepted rules and industry standards. Your learning will be technologically enhanced by means of animated and narrated slides which supplement your classroom materials. Feedback on your assessed work is provided electronically.

If you are in employment your workplace will act as a framework for measurement to develop your skills and knowledge.
