New Student Health Hub brings joint health and wellbeing support to Newcastle and Northumbria students

9th October 2026

A new drop-in service is bringing health and wellbeing support for students at both Newcastle University and Northumbria University together under one roof for the first time.

The Student Health Hub, delivered jointly by both universities alongside NHS and community partners, is open every Friday morning at King's Gate, Newcastle University. No referral or appointment is needed - students can simply walk in.

What can students come to the Hub for?

There's no such thing as too small, too big, or “not the right kind of problem.” Students can access the Hub for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Physical health worries or GP-type issues
  • Mental health and wellbeing support
  • Sexual health advice or concerns
  • Domestic abuse or violence
  • Support after sexual violence or assault
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Housing problems, or worries about where they're living
  • Money and finance worries
  • Support around a disability
  • Academic stress or concerns affecting their studies
  • Anything else - if a student isn't sure it fits, they're encouraged to bring it anyway

One space, no wrong door

Rather than navigating multiple services separately, students who visit the Hub can talk to a member of the team and be guided straight to the right support, whether that's on the day or through a booked follow-up. The service is designed to offer support early, before issues reach crisis point, and to stop students falling through the gaps between different services.

It is open to all students at both universities, whatever they're going through and whatever stage they're at. Students don't need to know exactly what kind of support they're looking for before they arrive - working that out together is part of what the Hub is there to do.

Part of a growing partnership

The Student Health Hub builds on the long-standing collaboration between the two universities through the Collaborative Newcastle Universities Agreement (CNUA), formed in 2021. Student mental health and wellbeing is one of the CNUA's key areas of focus, alongside community and housing, and the two universities have continued to develop joint strategies in this space, with the Health Hub marking a significant next step in that partnership.

Services under one roof

As part of the Hub, students can also access a range of university and community partner support, including:

  • GP services from Saville Medical Group
  • Everyturn Mental Health
  • Brook
  • Newcastle Treatment and Recovery (NTaR)
  • NHS (CNTW)
  • Wellbeing services from both Newcastle University and Northumbria University

Students who aren't sure which service they need can simply come along and talk it through with the team.

"Supporting our students' health and wellbeing is something we take very seriously at Northumbria, and we have well-established services that students can rely on throughout their time with us. The Student Health Hub builds on that foundation. By working alongside Newcastle University, the NHS and our community partners, we're adding another way for students to get help early, in a relaxed, drop-in setting, and to be guided to the right support without having to repeat their story. It complements everything we already offer, and I'd encourage any student who isn't sure where to turn to come along."

Vashti Hutton, Director of Student Life and Wellbeing, Northumbria University

How it works

1. Walk in. No appointment is needed - students are welcomed at reception, asked for a few basic details, and talked through consent before anything else happens.
2. Have a quick chat. A brief, friendly conversation with the team helps identify what would help and who's best placed to support them.
3. Access support. Depending on what's needed, this might mean on-the-day support, a booked follow-up, self-help resources, or a safety plan.
4. Stay supported. With the student's consent, the right people are kept informed of what's been agreed, so students don't have to repeat their story.

Opening times and location

The Student Health Hub is open between 9.30am - 12.30pm each Friday morning. The Hub is based on Level 2 of Newcastle University’s Kings Gate building. King’s Gate is located here on Google Maps.

Important information

The Student Health Hub is an additional service and does not replace the need to register with a local GP practice or the use of wider NHS services. Students who haven't yet registered with a GP are encouraged to do so as soon as possible and should always call 999 or go to A&E in an emergency.
