Northumbria University's Psychology with Criminology degree provides the perfect combination of skills to interpret human behaviour, investigate motivation and the causes of crime and victimisation, and the ways in which societies respond to crime.
Taught by research-active academics in modern facilities, you will develop an understanding of the theories behind the ways we think and behave, examining a wide range of domains within psychology and explore a range of psychology and criminology modules including contemporary issues in criminality and the criminal justice system. You will also have the opportunity to analyse global issues, from the point of view of both offender and victim. Teaching content is delivered across Northumbria's Health and Life Sciences and Arts, Design and Social Sciences faculties, opening doors to both Psychology and Criminology career paths.
A final year research project can be tailored towards your interests and careers aspirations and you will graduate with the knowledge and skills needed for a career in research, education or psychology, or within the criminal justice system.
Over 92% of students studying Psychology at Northumbria thought staff were good at explaining things (NSS, 2024).
Northumbria’s research in Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience is ranked 15th in the UK for research power out of 93 submissions (REF, 2021). This is a rise of 28 places from 43rd in 2014.
Psychology at Northumbria is ranked Top 35 in the UK by the Complete University Guide for 2025.
Accredited Degree - To meet the requirements for Graduate Basis for Chartered membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society, you must achieve a 2:2 or higher, and must pass the empirical psychology project.

The carefully selected psychology and criminology modules blend practical and theoretical content. Your practical skills will be developed through hands-on learning sessions in specialist learning laboratories, and learning is reinforced through traditional lectures and seminars. The programme is designed to bring these subjects to life and help you apply your theoretical knowledge to real social issues.
We believe in innovative teaching and use social media, apps and podcasts along with the eLearning Portal, lecture capture and online submission and feedback tools to support your learning.

We are also home to three associated specialist laboratories: the Brain Performance and Nutrition Research Centre, the Northumbria Sleep Research Lab, and the Psychology and Communication Technologies Lab (PaCTLab). * This is the tuition fee for your first year of study. You should expect to pay tuition fees for every year of study. The University may increase fees in the second and subsequent years of your course at our discretion in line with any inflationary or other uplift, as decided by the UK Government, up to the maximum amount for fees permitted by UK law or regulation for that academic year. To give students an indication of the likely scale of any future increase, the UK government has recently suggested that increases may be linked to RPIX ( Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments)

Please note that CR6003 (Crime and Society in Newcastle and Amsterdam) has a limited number of places and can accommodate a maximum of 50 students. The fieldtrip to Amsterdam is an integral part of this module and does incur an additional financial cost of approximately £850 (this cost may vary). Every student will be required to pay a £100 non-refundable deposit later in semester two of the second year, and then in semester one of the third year every student going will have to pay the remainder of the costs. Accordingly, please take special consideration when deciding whether to select this module.
