What will I learn on this module?

This module gives you the opportunity to further focus on your interest and identity in relation to fashion communication, building a body of work that represents your potential to influence and shape your chosen industry sector.

You will fully immerse yourself in the research, conceptualisation and realisation of a self-determined project, building on the core skills, practice, methodologies, knowledge and understanding you have the programme. Your work will demonstrate your understanding of social, ethical and cultural issues and influences inherent in contemporary and emerging fashion communication practice.

You will delve into your chosen topic, thoroughly researching the area and collating evidence/data to provide the foundation of your project. You will then move to gain insights, concepts and ideas, supported by peers and staff in tutorial sessions and studio work. You will define your outputs and, with further support, bring them to fruition. The range of opportunities to present your final piece/s may include film, PR and promotional campaigns, experience designs, printed publications, exhibitions, digital platforms, and more. You may have the opportunity to use this work to represent you through internal and external events and industry settings (competitions, shows, exhibitions).

Alongside your major project, you will continue to develop your professional exit portfolio website, presenting your Major Project and a selection of your projects through a digital format that reflects your personal branding, and positions your practice in relation to your choice of further study, industry or enterprise.

How will I learn on this module?

The module focuses on the production of a final portfolio piece, positioning you, your interests and your future within the fashion communication sector. You will be supported across a series of workshops to explore concept development, strategic deployment and final execution of your self-directed project. Initial concepts will be discussed with staff and peers in small group sessions, allowing you to explore ideas and receive support from multiple perspectives. You will then develop your project utilising the expertise of academic and technical staff to fulfil your own aspirational piece. Further discussion and critique from staff and peers will help progress your work within the studio environment. You will be encouraged to engage with a range of sources and platforms, engaging in proactive self-reflection, evidencing the evolution of your academic and professional practice in your research and development file.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module will be workshop and tutorial based. Direction as to skills and work will often be delivered at the start of weekly sessions before you continue to engage with research, discussion, and production of work. Formative feedback will occur regularly as you build your project across the module. You will also receive tailored technical delivery and/or support, focusing on both digital and practical skills where possible/relevant. You will engage in the studio environment, working alongside peers to assist in the development of your skillset as communicators. Opportunity to engage with technical staff will be available inside and outside of scheduled sessions.

Module abstract

The culmination of your time here as an Undergraduate student, your Final Major Project 2 allows you to demonstrate your skills in a self-directed project that demonstrates curiosity, critical thinking, creativity and the application of methodologies and practices. Your final piece can be facilitated across digital, physical and experiential platforms, utilising soft and hard skills, contemporary and traditional techniques, to truly allow you to fully express your communicative ability to a professional standard. Your concept will be supported by a unique Creative Strategy and Promotion document outlining how you would launch your concept and get it noticed.

Your project will also be communicated through a website that also operates as a portfolio, housing a selection of your best projects and industry experience, defining your position as a contemporary practitioner within your chosen field.
