FA4032 - Content Creation and Media 1

What will I learn on this module?

This module requires students to consider the nature of content creation and its value to the contemporary fashion sector. You will develop your communication skills across the module, while considering the characteristics of different platforms and the nuances of communicative practices across each area. You will also learn to consider which media channels are appropriate in engaging defined audiences, and reflect on how content can reach these individuals effectively. You will enhance your communicative abilities through developing narratives around themes outlined in initial briefing sessions. These themes will be based on contemporary and emerging trends and topics of interest to the fashion industry, asking students to ‘report’ their findings through relevant media platforms.

Hard and soft skills will be developed as you engage with technology and individuals in the development of your final editorial piece. You will be required to gain audience insights, potentially recording and directing interviews with relevant parties to generate content which contributes to the conceptual development of final submissions. You will receive direction and supervision linked to creating practical outputs recognised by industry practitioners, which will include digital facing editorial content, visual supporting materials and/or oral/aural content (e.g. podcast, social media). Students will produce further social content supporting and promoting their long form feature piece.

How will I learn on this module?

Lecturers with practical industry experience and supporting research will guide you through the module. Where possible, opportunities for engagement with industry though guest speakers will inform current practices and approaches to content creation and dissemination. Workshop sessions will be used to deliver information, engender skills, question issues and develop outputs. Students are encouraged to reflect on cultural practices, audiences and their own engagement with content aligned to the fashion sector. Practical skills linked to writing, visualisation and techniques linked to gathering content will be developed through timetabled sessions, self-directed and independent study.

You will source and engage with a range of material showing your ability to review and evaluate findings through enquiry-based, creative practice. Discussions with staff and alongside peers, will help you to respond to briefs, subsequently generating dynamic ideas. You will learn to present your findings using a range of communication tools aimed at engaging a defined audience.

Small group tutorials will support the development of professional skills and will present an opportunity for constructive feedback from tutors and peers. The hard and soft skills deployed across the module will be utilised across the remaining years on the programme and provide transferable skills appropriate for a dynamic media industry.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

An initial briefing will outline the goals of the module, alongside the structure of the sessions to follow. Workshops will be delivered by knowledgeable staff, often reflecting their own experience and research interests linked to the Fashion Communication sector. Where applicable, technical skills will be delivered by expert staff, providing demonstrations and support for students across their process. Methods for effective communication (analysis, strategic development, planning, writing and design) will be discussed within workshops, with tutorials aimed at further developing your final submission. Further group work in the form of practice and discussion will assist your development in terms of knowledge, understanding and your overall communication skills.

How will I be assessed?

FORMATIVE: Formative feedback will be delivered across the module. This can be verbal and/or textual and will be aligned to workshop activities.

SUMMATIVE
Portfolio: Editorial Piece, Social Content and Development Work 80%
Digital facing textual, visual and/or oral/aural editorial feature piece, including promotional social content. Plus accompanying development file. (LO1,2,3,4)

Reflection 20%
500 word reflection outlining process and engagement with chosen subject in the context of their audience and the wider fashion industry. (LO5)

Module abstract

Methods of communication are constantly in flux, yet narratives remain consistent in engaging audiences through the dissemination of relevant, important and interesting stories. This module will further develop students emerging communication skills through the construction of a digital editorial piece aligned to industry expectations through reporting a contemporary fashion topic to a defined and considered audience. The subject matter will be aligned to the brief and may consider upcoming events, pertinent issues shifting the fashion sector, and/or those with influence in shaping fashion. Students will consider current events and media circulating fashion, connecting to relevant individuals and using this to generate content to be disseminated through appropriate media channels. Students will have the opportunity to make use of written, visual and aural methods of communication in the form of long form feature writing, photography/moving image and recorded interviews/conversations which will collectively generate their final portfolio submission aimed towards a selected target audience.
