Cultural Negotiation of Science

The Cultural Negotiation of Science group unites fine artists, researchers from animation and the history of art and technology who critically engage with expert cultures across a broad spectrum of fundamental, biomedical and climate science, as well as the fields of genetics, geology, botany and museology.

Challenging the tendency amongst the sciences to use art as an instrumental or illustrative device to interpret science, the group adopts a performative approach to the production of knowledge and new models of understanding and relating. A key example here is the dialogue with scientists arising from Fiona Crisp's Leverhulme supported research ‘Material Sight: Re-presenting the Spaces of Fundamental Science’ (2016–18).
