The Care Innovation and Organisation research group focuses on understanding, innovating, evaluating and effecting change in the organisation and provision of health and social care. 

The group’s work ranges from initiation, scoping and development of novel ideas, to feasibility studies, pilot and full trials with embedded process evaluations and cost-effectiveness studies, as well as the scaling up and scaling out of evidence-based interventions. 

Led by Professors Tracy Finch and Tim Rapley, we bring together different disciplines, including Biostatistics, Health Economics, Health Psychology, Medical Sociology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. We work with key health and social care stakeholders to develop innovative, individualised and organisational solutions. 

Research includes:

• Developing practical solutions with and for people with a range of health problems, including enabling and supporting quality of life and independent living for people with long-term neurological conditions, digital support for people with musculoskeletal problems, and best practice recommendations for local authority social care work. 
• We work on many NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) in a wide range of primary, secondary and community health and social care contexts. 
• We develop priority setting tools, return on investment and cost effectiveness analysis research as well as novel spatio-temporal models for forecasting, health policy evaluation and disease surveillance in both developed and developing countries. 

The Care Innovation and Organisation group is internationally recognised for leadership in implementation and improvement research. We are developing and applying theories, tools and methodologies for implementation research, including interventions to support implementation in practice. 

Regionally, members of the group are leading work on Knowledge Mobilisation and Implementation Science (‘SKIM’ theme) and Enabling Methodologies within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East North Cumbria. Our work within this applied research collaboration aims to embed ‘implementation and mobilisation’ approaches in applied health research across the region.
