Erasmus+ staff mobility

Teach, train or collaborate at a partner institution

Northumbria has applied for Erasmus+ Charter status, the first step towards accessing Erasmus+ funding for staff mobility. If successful, we expect a funding call to open later in 2026, covering staff mobility activity in the 2027/28 academic year. This page relates specifically to staff mobility opportunities funded through Erasmus+ and will be updated as each milestone is confirmed.

Northumbria University is committed to supporting staff mobility where it contributes to individual development, institutional improvement, and international collaboration in support of the University's Strategy.

Staff mobility provides opportunities for colleagues to learn, teach, train, and share knowledge with partner institutions in other countries. These activities help participants develop new skills, exchange good practice, strengthen professional networks, and contribute to innovation in education and training.

Through these exchanges, institutions can build and strengthen international partnerships, enhance the quality of their activities, and promote intercultural understanding and collaboration.

This page relates specifically to staff mobility opportunities funded through Erasmus+ and will be updated once the outcome of our application is known.

Northumbria Colleagues Travelling Abroad Through Erasmus+

At present, UK higher education institutions do not have access to Erasmus+ funding. The University has applied to participate in the programme from 2027 onwards and is awaiting the outcome of that application.

Until further information is available, colleagues wishing to undertake international teaching, training, or professional development activities should discuss their plans with their line manager and Head of School or Department.

If the University's application is successful, opportunities will be open to eligible academic, research, and professional support staff, subject to Erasmus+ requirements, available funding, and the University's selection process.

The University is committed to ensuring that opportunities are promoted fairly and that applications are assessed through a transparent process.

If Erasmus+ funding is secured, staff mobility will be managed through a defined application and approval process.

Participants will be required to agree clear objectives for their mobility activity and complete the necessary Erasmus+ documentation before travelling. This will normally include a mobility agreement approved by both the sending and host institutions.

Further details will be published when applications open.

The University will monitor participation, outcomes, and feedback to promote equitable access to opportunities, support continuous improvement, and ensure mobility activities contribute to institutional priorities and Erasmus+ objectives.

Subject to funding approval, the University will provide guidance and support throughout the mobility process, including:

  • Application and approval procedures
  • Travel and practical arrangements
  • Risk management and health and safety requirements
  • Insurance guidance
  • Cultural and language preparation where appropriate
  • Access to relevant institutional contacts before and during the mobility period

Participation in approved mobility activities will be taken into account through normal workload planning and professional development processes.
