Sustainable Travel
Our Environmental Sustainability Policy sets out our commitment to reducing emission from business and commuter travel. We produce a Sustainable Travel Plan every 2 years which outlines our plans and performance in relation to these targets. We also create a report measuring emissions arising from student at the start and end of the semester.
We offer a range of initiatives to encourage cycling at Northumbria University, including free Dr Bike sessions, guided rides, free security tagging and over 800 secure bicycle parking spaces are available on campus. Visit the Cycle 2 Campus page to learn more.
We are a part of the GoSmarter Business Network which sees organisations across the Newcastle area collaborate on issues relating to green travel. We currently hold the Go Smarter Gold Award.
Cycling

Tyne and Wear Metro
The Tyne and Wear Metro is a light rail system serving:
- Newcastle
- Gateshead
- Sunderland
- North Tyneside
- South Tyneside
The Metro rail network offers fast, efficient travel around the city and is operated by Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive.
Monument, Haymarket and Manors stations are closest to City campus. Trains run frequently during the day. The service starts around 5.45am and stops around 11:30pm. We also offer discounted travel on public transport to staff. The Corporate Public Transport Scheme is available for journeys on the Metro. For full details see the Corporate Public Transport Scheme page.
Rail
We offer discounted travel on commuter rail travel to staff through the Corporate Public Transport Scheme. For full details see the Corporate Public Transport Scheme page.
The closest Railway station is Newcastle Central Station which is a 15 minute walk to City campus. Newcastle Central Railway Station also has its own Metro station.

Bus
We offer discounted travel on local bus services (Go North East, Arriva, and Stagecoach) to staff through the Corporate Public Transport Scheme. For full details see the Corporate Public Transport Scheme page.
The closest bus stations to City Campus are Eldon Square and Haymarket. You can get local bus information and timetables from the Nexus journey planner.

Inter-Campus Travel: Free No 1 Bus
Northumbria University in Newcastle is split over two campuses, City Centre and Coach Lane. Staff and students get free travel between the campuses on the Number 1 bus operated by Stagecoach, which runs every 10 minutes at peak times. For more details, and the stops you can use see here.
Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicle charging points are available at both City Campus and Coach Lane Campus via the PodPoint app. You will need to have a Hunt and Park permit to use the chargers at City Campus, or a Coach Lane permit and made an appropriate pay and display ticket purchase to use the chargers at Coach Lane Campus.

Parking
The University recognises the key role it has to play in caring for the environment and therefore we encourage the use of public transport by staff, students and visitors in order to reduce the environmental impact of commuting.
Car parking on Campus is managed by our parking partner, APCOA. The University has parking spaces available for use by members of staff, students and visitors, and there is a permit system in place. Expand the relevant sections below to learn more.

Park and Ride
As the city centre is a busy place to park, you may prefer to park at a Metro station and travel in by Metro. Tyne and Wear Metro offer park and ride options to ease parking congestion in the city centre.

Newcastle City Council Car Parks and On Street Parking
Newcastle City Council operates 8 city centre multi-storey car parks and 48 surface car parks. Parking in the pay and display bays in all council operated multi-storey car parks is free after 5pm from Monday to Saturday (with the exception of Stadium car park).
