Dr Johnny Rutherford

Senior Research Assistant

School: Geography and Natural Sciences

Johnny Rutherford

I am a researcher in Earth and Environmental Science, specialising in Arctic snow processes, cryospheric modelling and climate change. My research combines process-based modelling and machine learning to improve the representation of snow properties and their influence on ground thermal dynamics, permafrost and cold-season carbon fluxes. I am particularly interested in understanding how changes in snow cover influence Arctic land–atmosphere interactions and improving the representation of snow processes in Earth system models. My current research also explores the use of Earth observation to address observational gaps in snow internal properties and inform future satellite mission requirements.
