Dr Katlego Mthimunye

Assistant Professor

Department: Nursing, Midwifery & Health

Dr Katlego Mthimunye is a Senior Lecturer (Adult Nursing) in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences - Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health. Katlego previously worked at the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, as well as University of the Western Cape, South Africa, where he taught pre- and post-registration nursing modules and supervise/d post-graduate dissertations (Honours, Masters and PhD).

His post registration educational background includes a Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing Education from Stellenbosch University (SU) as well as MSc in Nursing Education and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing from the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Katlego’s research interests are Renal Health, Nursing Education and Health Information Systems.

His educational philosophy is best captured in the notion of a learner-centred ideology aligned to the Cognitive development theory by Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934). Katlego’s goal is to positively influence students by showing them how they are valued individuals who should always strive for self-improvement and that everyone should be respected, recognised for their work, and encouraged to share ideas. In addition, he believes that no single approach is right; every individual student’s success is dependent on multiple levels of context.

Katlego holds dual professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council - NMC (Adult Nursing) and the South African Nursing Council – SANC (Registered General Nurse, Registered midwife/Accoucheur, Registered Mental Health Nurse, Registered Community Health Nurse and Registered Nurse Educator). His clinical experience in nursing practice ranges from Surgery (ward-based) and Neurosurgery ICU. His most recent clinical experience is in Renal nursing, working in the private and public sector. Katlego had the opportunity to work as a dialysis nurse providing a range of treatment modalities in chronic and acute setting in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
