Call for expressions of interest for participation in the

IJCLE Research Intensive Workshop 2023

Law Society of Ireland, Dublin, Ireland, 20-21 July 2023

This year the IJCLE are doing something new in place of our traditional conference format.

We have only recently had a very successful IJCLE/GAJE meeting with our South African partners (SAULCA) at Stellenbosch in December 2022.

A wonderful clinic conference, ‘Enhancing Clinical Legal Education in Europe: 10 years of ENCLE (yet to come)’ organised by our ENCLE colleagues, will take place on 17th -18th July in Liverpool.

Thus, our IJCLE event this year will be focused on our research in progress.  We will facilitate a workshop, hosted in the lovely setting of the Law Society of Ireland’s headquarters at Blackhall Place, Dublin.  Here, over two intensive days, colleagues can share their research, their methods and analysis approaches.  They will give and receive supportive feedback and challenge on the nature of the evidence being generated in the clinical legal education field.  The goal of the workshop is to engage deeply with our own and others’ research, to spark new ideas and collaborations and to improve the quality of our research and, perhaps most crucially, our confidence as a clinical community in its quality.

Sessions will draw their specific focus from colleagues’ work in progress and are also likely to include:

  • Consideration of the origin of research questions – whose agenda?
  • Modes of participation in research – practical and ethical considerations for partner organisations, students, clients and communities
  • Interpretation and analysis of data – a range of lenses
  • Communication of findings - what is ‘impact’ in this context?

The workshop is open to any colleagues who are in the midst of their research rather than still at the design phase or post-publication.  As the workshop will focus on feedback and peer learning, you will need to have tools and data to share.  If your research is completed, you may not have active questions to explore, so whilst your expertise and reflections on your experience will be valuable to others, you may not gain the full benefit from participating.  Some colleagues, reading this, may consider themselves not experienced enough to share expertise or too experienced to need feedback – a moment’s reflection should hopefully explode these ideas.  All of us have lots to learn and to convey and we aim for a genuinely co-learning culture in this workshop. If we are successful, we hope that the workshop will become a regular feature in the IJCLE calendar and that colleagues will be able to participate at the most helpful part of the research cycle for them.

Places on this workshop are limited and will be assessed on submission, so successful applicants may receive confirmation before the deadline of 23rd April 2023.
