Career Path: Teacher, Primary School

Having worked as a teaching assistant for 6 years after graduating with a sports studies degree I decided to progress to become a teacher. I completed the part time primary PGCE which involved committing to weekends at university whilst still working as a teaching assistant when not on placement at university. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and placements in a range of different schools in my home town of Hartlepool.

What are you doing now?

I currently teach a lovely class of year one.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

I looked round the University and felt that at that time the course was right for me, as I could still live at home and commute when necessary.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

We had a range of lectures that we studied and lots of of lecturers. Although our course was condensed and compact we got a lot out of the course.

How connected was your course with industry?

Throughout the placement I was in three different schools with all various needs.

If you took on a placement during your course how did you feel this helped you in your career/ with your studies?

The placement prepared me for the future of teaching. I had extremely supportive teachers and mentors which were there to assist and mentor me when needed.

What was the best thing about your course?

The people who I made friends with on the course.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

Within my study I achieved my goal of becoming a teacher the support and academic side of the university was excellent.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

I learnt lots of skills on my course including being a positive role model, communication and punctuality. I also gained confidence. I now use these skills on a daily basis as a teacher.
