Nursing, Midwifery & Health Study

The department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health provides a range of dynamic programmes at pre and post-registration and under and postgraduate levels.

Where appropriate, these programmes are approved by Professional Regulatory Statutory Bodies (PRSBs) including the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health Care Professions Council.

Students are able to choose to study Adult Nursing, Children's Nursing, Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disability Nursing at pre-registration degree level and some programmes are offered at Masters level. We also offer a Diploma of Higher Education in Operating Department Practice (ODP).

Students spend 50% of their programmes on clinical placements in these Trusts, and learning is supported by an identified clinical mentor and academic staff from the university.

With a strong focus on practical training and experiential learning, the Nursing, Midwifery and Health courses at Northumbria prepare students for rewarding careers in healthcare while offering an opportunity to eligible students with NHS Funding

Our state-of-the-art facilities and experienced faculty ensure a well-rounded education that equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to make a positive impact on people’s health and well-being.

These Trusts provide high quality care locally, regionally and nationally and offer students the opportunity to work within expert multi-disciplinary teams. These partners share the same set of professional values that puts the safety and wellbeing of the patient and their family at the centre of all that they do.

Personal and Professional Support

Student support is vital to success and this is achieved through personal and professional development planning which aims to increase curiosity and motivation for learning and self-development. At university, this is achieved by Personal Tutors, Practice Learning Teams, Learning Leaders (peer support) and through online networking with the wider professional community. Each student is supported though their individual learning journey through facilitation of lectures, small group seminars, practical teaching sessions and one-to-one tutorials.

The programmes have been planned collaboratively with a range of stakeholders and this provides students with opportunities to learn with and from other health care students, through a process of inter-professional learning. This is one of the distinctive features of healthcare education at Northumbria University.

In addition to preparing students for registration with the NMC or HCPC we also have a wide range of post-registration and postgraduate provision. These include commissioned masterclasses, modules and programmes for Continuing Workforce Development to ensure that the health care workforce is professionally developed to meet the demands of a dynamic health service. This provision is offered at both undergraduate and Masters levels. This provision was voted Nurse Education Provider of the Year in the Student Nursing Times awards for three consecutive years. As well as commissioned programmes, we are able to offer bespoke programmes and are willing to work with healthcare providers to design individual courses.

We also have a growing international provision in the department with our undergraduate and Masters programmes which have been specifically designed for overseas students.
