Northumbrian Environmental Training and Research Centre (NETREC)

We provide dedicated research and consultancy for hundreds of companies across the UK in environmental issues and analytical services for industry, as well as a range of accredited training courses including the NEBOSH diploma and certificate.

The Northumbrian Environmental Training and Research Centre (NETREC) is a dedicated research, consultancy and training unit providing environmental and analytical training and consultancy for industry.

Since 1996, we have helped hundreds of UK companies, with projects ranging from routine chemical analysis to long-term research and development work. We have dedicated staff, laboratories and equipment and we can also call upon expertise from other parts of the University.

We have coordinated large public sector environmental protection projects such as the North of England Air Quality in Major Incidents Project (from 2009 to 2014), which involved mobile monitoring at major incident fires.

Specialist analysis services include XRF, FTIR, Isotope-MS, CHN and portable gas chromatography. We also have mobile air quality monitoring equipment including an Osiris particulate monitor (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1), DustMate monitors for occupational hygiene monitoring of particulates, an Echo high volume sampler (PM10 and PM2.5) and a range of portable samplers.

NETREC also offers a range of accredited training courses, including the NEBOSH Diploma, NEBOSH Certificate and NEBOSH Construction Certificate. The courses are offered as in a variety of attendance modes, including part-time, distance learning and block.

This group is a part of the University’s multi-disciplinary research into the themes of Biodesign for the Bioeconomy and Extreme Environments.

Research from this group will be submitted to REF2021 under UoA 14: Geography and Environmental Studies.
