Join Our Board - Independent Governor Opportunities

Northumbria is a research-intensive university that unlocks potential for all, changing lives regionally, nationally and internationally. A bold, confident and ambitious university, we are an institution that embraces the future and faces challenges head on, enabling us to meet the world’s changing needs and make a positive difference. Named Times Higher Education University of the Year in 2022, we are ranked in the UK top 40 in the Complete University Guide 2024, top 50 in the Times Good University Guide 2023 and Guardian University League Table 2022. We were ranked top 25 in the UK for research power in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, recording the biggest rise of any UK university for this measure for the second time.

We are seeking inspiring individuals from all sectors of the community who are interested in becoming Independent Members of our Board of Governors. You will be passionate about the transformative power of education and research, share Northumbria’s Vision and have the motivation, commitment, ambition, and capacity to help shape its future. Our Governors contribute at the highest levels of the University, utilising their professional expertise to support, question, and advise the Vice-Chancellor and University Executive on key strategic matters.

We are particularly interested to hear from candidates with senior executive and/or non-executive experience in large, complex organisations, bringing knowledge and experience in corporate finance, audit or legal would be helpful but is not essential. The board meets five times per year and Governors also have the opportunity to engage with our students and staff and be part of some of the exciting events in our academic calendar. You will join us as we go through an exciting phase as we finalise the development the next University Strategy. This is an exceptional opportunity to be involved in the governance of one of the largest Universities in the UK with almost 38,000 students from 138 countries and over 3,500 staff.
