UCAS Clearing Advice for Parents and Guardians

Help your child prepare for UCAS Clearing.

If students change their mind about where or what they want to study or they don’t get the grades expected, they can still find a place through UCAS Clearing. Many students join Northumbria University this way.

So what happens on results day? If your child meets the grades for their firm choice, congratulations! Their place will be automatically confirmed. If they miss the grades, they might still be accepted by their insurance choice. Check UCAS Hub for their application status and key deadlines.

Our experienced staff can support students through Clearing via our hotline at 0800 085 1085. For more tips and support, visit our ‘What is Clearing’ page, you can browse our parent based Frequently Asked questions below or view our student focused Frequently Asked Questions.

*Please note: we use the terms ‘parent’ and ‘child' throughout the website for simplicity, but we appreciate that many of you may be carers, legal guardians or step-parents. This information is aimed at anyone who fulfils a parenting role for a young person in the UK who is considering a university education.

UNDERSTANDING CLEARING AND ELIGIBILITY

UCAS Clearing is an opportunity to find a university spot if a student's initial plans didn't work out - perhaps they didn't meet offer conditions, haven't yet applied, didn't receive offers, or simply changed their mind.

Clearing is just one of the many ways to start the university journey. Hear from some of our students who accessed Northumbria through Clearing.

KEY DATES AND COMMON MYTHS

For 2025 entry, UCAS Clearing officially opened on the 5th of July 2025. For more important dates to consider, view our simple Clearing Process Guide

PRACTICAL STEPS AND PARENTAL/CARER SUPPORT

You can explore our available courses on our Clearing Hub then, if they have their results, they can continue to our NU Clearing Form to find out if they are eligible for an offer.

If someone is waiting on their results, they may want to get a feel for Northumbria, to decide if it feels right for them. They can do this by taking virtual tours, finding us on social media, and hearing from our students. They can also become a Northumbria Clearing VIP, to unlock exclusive content and early access to key opportunities.

On Results Day, if someone does want to apply through Clearing, they can call our Hotline on 0800 085 1085. When calling Northumbria, they will need their UCAS number, Clearing number, and details about their qualifications.

You may wish to encourage them to prepare what they want to say, writing down any questions they may have, and have a pen and paper ready for taking notes.

We are happy to speak to parents/carers on the Clearing hotline to offer advice and guidance, though we can't discuss personal details or provide an offer without consent of the individual.

If the individual provides consent beforehand (or have a nominated contact listed on their UCAS form), we can speak to others on their behalf, however, they may be required to confirm any personal details throughout the call.

Alternatively, they can provide consent in advance, via email, to allow us to discuss their clearing application with a nominated contact. The individual can do this at bc.ad.clearing@northumbria.ac.uk.

If someone is unable to call, they can use our Northumbria Clearing Form to apply for a place.
