Success Funds

We understand that unexpected financial hardship can sometimes arise during your time at university. That’s why we offer the Success Funds - dedicated financial support designed to help students overcome challenges and stay focused on their studies. Whether it’s help with living costs, travel, or course-related expenses, the Success Funds are just one of the many ways we invest in your success, ensuring that financial pressures don’t stand in the way of your future.

Northumbria's Success Funds include four targeted areas of support which help eligible students with essential costs during times of hardship:

  • Accommodation and Living Costs Fund - support for those struggling to pay rent, mortgage, utility bills, or essential groceries
  • Childcare Costs Fund - help for students receiving a Childcare Grant, NHS Childcare Allowance or the childcare element of Universal Credit
  • Course Costs Fund - assistance with course-related expenses like books, materials, printing, uniforms, or field trip costs (excluding tuition fees)
  • Travel Costs Fund - support for travel expenses to and from university, placements, study abroad programmes, or additional travel costs due to local transport disruptions

These funds are intended for students who are facing significant financial difficulty and have exhausted all other sources of support. We encourage students to apply when there is clear evidence of financial need.

The Success Funds are available to eligible UK (Home) students. Unfortunately, international and EU students are not currently eligible for these funds - however, tailored guidance and financial advice is available from our specialist advisors for our international student community.

If you find yourself facing unexpected financial hardship during your studies at Northumbria, you may be eligible to apply for support through the Success Funds.

Applications are simple and accessible, and our specialist advisors are here to support you when applying. When the funds application is open, eligible students will be able to apply online via the University's Student Portal (you will also need to create a free Blackbullion account).

If you are unsure whether the Success Funds are right for you, just reach out and we’ll be happy to advise.

Our specialist teams are here to support you every step of the way.
