Counselling and Mental Health Overview

At Northumbria we take a holistic and responsive approach to mental wellbeing and have a huge variety of options to choose from through our Student Life and Wellbeing team and Students’ Union.

At enrolment, you’ll be encouraged to join our Mental Health and Wellbeing initiative and Educational Analytics programme. These initiatives use reliable data, such as attendance information, to ensure you get appropriate help, when you need it. For example, if we notice you’ve missed classes - we’ll be in touch to make sure you’re OK and check if you need any additional support.

We’re passionate about ensuring you’re always supported throughout your entire student journey.

Whatever you need, we’ll be here for you every step of the way.

Online Self-Help Appointments

We have a wide range of digital resources available to help students solve their own problems or achieve their goals without the direct supervision of professionals. These tools help students expand their knowledge and understanding of themselves, whilst providing advice and guidance on how to manage the issues concerning them.

 

Guided online self-help courses via SilverCloud

These courses are structured to allow students to help themselves with support from another person. They require students to work with the contents of the self-help material to overcome any problems and achieve their personal goals.

Wellbeing Workshops

We have a range of useful Wellbeing Workshops to help you explore particular wellbeing issues that may be impacting you. You can also use these workshops if you’d just like a little more information on how to either prevent issues in the future of maintain your wellbeing now. Examples of workshops include avoiding burnout, sleep wellness and dealing with worry.

Counselling and Mental Health Support Team

If, during your time as a student at Northumbria you feel you might want or need some support with a personal, emotional or mental health issue, you can access support from our Counselling and Mental Health Support Team. Our service is available to all enrolled Northumbria students who are residents in the UK. Types of support includes:

• Initial wellbeing triage appointment with a practitioner

• Appointments with Counsellors

• Appointments with mental health practitioners (which can include identifying possible mental health issues).

Additional Support

Students at Northumbria also have access to:

• Student Portal – offering lots of accessible self-help information and guidance.

• Ask4Help – available 24/7 during term-time, Ask4Help is the first point of contact for all student support enquiries.

• Referrals to other support in the University and to support services in the community.
