What is Multidisciplinary Innovation MA/MSc?

What is Multidisciplinary Innovation?

Multidisciplinary Innovation (MDI) involves working on real-life projects as part of a creative team and draws on several different disciplines including design, technology, and business. We aim to approach complex business challenges with innovative solutions, in practice, this means considering new ways of approaching a problem that involves more than one field of study.

What kind of course is it?

MDI is a one-year Masters programme. On a day-to-day basis we have a mixture of taught sessions and self-led project-based work.

What does it involve?

The course is primarily project focused where we have completed projects for clients like Mars and Unilever, as well as local start-ups and charities where we get to work on projects which really matter to a community. We work on a whole host of different tasks, such as research, prototyping and product design and this happens through on-campus task reviews, workshops and final presentations which are hosted online when working with large and international organisations.

What will I Learn?

Our course covers several areas, mainly consisting of communication, planning, science and technology, and community. Whilst looking within these areas, you will be challenged to think creatively about analysis, evaluation and explore how many different areas and ideas can come together to work most effectively.

What would I get out of it?

Whilst studying, you will be working on projects which involve complex problem-solving issues, meaning you get to take that invaluable experience with you when thinking about jobs after you graduate.

Who can apply?

We welcome students from lots of different areas and disciplines as our projects involve using research, marketing and brand development and product design to tackle the biggest problems facing organisations and communities. Our student span from business, marketing, engineering, to design, fine art, psychology and foreign languages. We want to encourage students to consider new perspectives and think about challenges in new ways.

Top Career Opportunities in MDI

Entering a competitive job market can feel daunting, but with a multidisciplinary Innovation Masters degree you can arm yourself with valuable skills and experience to feel totally prepared.

What career relevant experience can I expect to gain?

We have a broad range of both long and short-term collaboration projects which cover key areas such as social innovation and product and service development. There are opportunities to grow your skills in several areas such as design, technology, and business which you will then take forward into your career.

What types of roles to students go on to?

Our past graduates have gone on to have successful careers within a variety of roles including; Innovation Strategy Consultant, Global Category Manager, Lead Advanced Design Studio Engineer, Creative Account Manager, Innovation Manager, User Experience Researcher, Market Project Manager, and Head of 3D Department, to name but a few.

What could this mean for me and my career?

The broad range of skills you will cover means you are not limited to one specific career path, rather that you are better enabled to work in whatever your passion is.
