Food Science and Nutrition

Why did you choose to study Food Science and Nutrition at Northumbria University?

I chose to study at Northumbria University for several reasons.  The option of a placement year appealed to me. As a part time waitress the option to gain the Intermediate Food Hygiene Certificate was also a bonus, and I think food nutrition is a growing industry.

Which company did you spend your placement with?

UNIQ Prepared foods, Northampton.

Has the placement benefitted you?  If so how?

Yes, I think the placement has benefitted me enormously. It has given me the opportunity to experience the world of work and see how my chosen subject is used on a practical level in the business world. I have also improved my organisation and interpersonal skills which I hope to build on in the future.

Would you recommend a placement to others?

Yes, the placement allowed me to learn a great deal and also meet new people/contacts and make new friends. I have also gained a year’s experience which I anticipate will be helpful when I enter the job market for real.

Was the level of support from the University and staff good?

The level of university and staff support was very high and everybody was happy to assist me with any enquires.

What would you like to do when you graduate?

When I graduate I would like to pursue a career in the food industry as a food technologist. Northumbria University and my own hard work have enabled me to further my progress in this direction. I intend to utilise the Northumbria University careers facility in my final year as part of my job-seeking programme.

What is the most interesting thing about your degree?

The placement year has been very interesting as you see the impact your choices have on the business and possible launch of a product as well as gaining some useful practical experience.

Do you have any comments you would like to add about your time at Northumbria?

I personally found the course very helpful and I hope the course will be developed on a yearly basis to encourage potential future students to enter this very exciting industry.

How would you sum up your time at Northumbria University so far?

Hard work but thoroughly enjoyable.
