What appealed to you about Northumbria University / studying in Newcastle?

I am an international student from Malaysia. Northumbria University is a Partner University of INTI International University in my Australian Degree Transfer Programme.

What qualifications did you have?

I finished a two year degree course (Australian Degree Transfer Programme) in INTI International University and transferred to Northumbria University in my second year.

How did you feel during your first week at Northumbria?

I was impressed by the modern buildings and the environment of Northumbria. I wasn’t familiar with the environment during my first week but I found that Northumbria University staff were very helpful and friendly.

What do you like most about the course?

The final year project - it provides enough freedom for students to propose their ideas of the project to their supervisor. If feasible, students are very likely to carry this out as their final year project.

Can you give an example of a piece of work you’ve been involved with recently?

Recently, I am brewing beer which is part of my final year project. I am fully supported by my supervisor throughout the process who has a very rich and expert experience in brewing beer. The laboratory is well-equipped and friendly laboratory assistants can always help you out when you are facing problems in your project.

How do you get on with your tutors?

The tutors are very helpful and friendly. If you have questions with your assignments or course, you can just see them in their offices or email.

Do you have the opportunity for any work placements during your course?

Yes, I had a four week work placement in a biscuit factory which is not far from Newcastle city. I found some very useful skills and gained experience in the real food industry.

What do you do when you’re not studying?

I play badminton and basketball. Northumbria has a modern sports centre which is well-equipped. Newcastle is voted as 'the best city for students'; the urban life brings much fun to students when they are pursuing achievements.

What’s your accommodation like?

I was living in University accommodation in my second year. The accommodation was well equipped and secure. Currently, I am living with my course mates in a house.

What would you like to do when you graduate?

I would like to work in the UK for one to two years for greater working experience.

Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course, or for university in general?

I got most information and advice from the University Placement Office. You can get all the information about study, financial advice and accommodation.

What three words would you use to describe your time at Northumbria?

Awesome, Amazing, Enjoyable.
