PhD in Geography

Research Aims & Objectives:

  • To utilise a novel multi-proxy approach for environmental research and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction in the Carpathian region, using a selection of peat bog cores.
  • To investigate the anthropogenic impact on the environment, with particular focus on the influence of regional mining & smelting, and of land use change and ecosystem disturbance in the region.
  • To analyse the natural cycling of elements as driven by past climate change and determine their relationship with the anthropogenic impact.

The focus of this project will be on the Holocene; the last 12,000 years, a period of great environmental changes, both as a result of natural climatic variations, and of course the impact of developing humanity.
