Joe Holt

BA (Hons) History

Where are you from?

Leeds

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

Great university in an even better city

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

It's like a home away from home. There's a real sense of community and a good feel from the region as a whole. Being from the North it only made sense to stick around the North.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

How welcoming the city is and how there's always something to do. The Quayside has impressed me the most. A walk down the Tyne on any day - whether sun or rain - is amazing.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming?  Was it easy to fit in?

Yes definitely.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

My course, it's exactly what I expected and enjoyed it way more than I thought I would.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

My lecturers and friends, they help you get through your degree at the worst of times and make the best of times even better.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

My girlfriend, I only see her every 3-4 weeks but she gave me the pick me up every time I saw her to see my degree through to the end.

What is your favourite place on campus?

The quad. Sitting on the grass on a lush day with everyone rushing by is strangely relaxing.

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects?  Tells us about the highlights?

Welcome Team and RAG, both great experiences to meet new people and get involved in volunteering.

What is the best thing about your course?

The choice of modules, so many.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Just get on with it. No matter how bad something may seem or how little time you have to do something, just get on with it, you'll get it done in the end.

What do you want to do in the future?  What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

No idea what career but I can tell I've become more analytical and logical, and I'm able to approach problems and tasks in a different way, seeing solutions or answers which might not always be that apparent. I've also gained a lot of confidence in myself and I'm not afraid to voice my opinion.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Make the most of it. There's so many opportunities available so just get involved.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

yes
