John Cavanagh

Information Technology Management for Business

Where are you from?

Yarm-on-Tees

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

It was away from home, but close enough! Plus it was the furthest North wher you can study my degree.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

It's an amazing city in an amazing region. My favourite things are probablyhaving drinks on the Quayside, or eating on the Quayside. But then a short car journey you can be at the coast; Tynemouth is really nice in summer.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

The friendliness of the people. I'd say I'm most impressed with the transport links and the easiness of getting around the city.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

Yes, very. A lot of like minded individuals.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

My programme leader and final year supervisor.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Pandon Building, has to be!

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?

Not really - though have been both course and faculty rep and attended meetings with faculty exec and representing the student views.

What is the best thing about your course?

The fact it is backed by some major employers and the design and dictate the learning objectives according to what the industry needs in graduates.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Start your work early and manage your time.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

Move into senior IT roles. I have learnt a mix of IT/business/soft skills that are allowing me to hit the ground running. An awareness of all of them will help me in my careers plans

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?

IT Project Manager placement at GSK a global pharmaceutical company. Worked on some cool projects improving GSK intellectual property systems so they can remain competitive. Also had lunch with the CIO, some senior Vice Presidents and other executives and won a dedication award from my Vice President.

Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips? If so, please tell us about them.

Yes. I travelled to Manchester to take part in an ITMB student employer event. Presented a 'smart planet' idea to a team of leading IT organisations including IBM. Our team came second and were highly commended for our idea.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Make sure you utilise every minute of your time, it is your most valuable asset. If people try and waste it, be offended and do something to stop it from happening again!

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

Confidence has increased, more aware of the wider business context when looking at project situations now.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Work, play, fun!

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

Yes!
