Sam Boon

LLB (Hons) / M Law (Exempting)

Where are you from?

Peterborough

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

The course I'm studying is perfect for the career I want, allowing me to achieve my goal of being a Solicitor. Also, the night life is amazing and everyone is really social.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

It's great. There are plenty of bars, sports facilities and other activities. Eldon Square is great and the Metrocentre is huge so shopping is always easy.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

The whole city has impressed me. I couldn't have chosen a better place to come and study. In terms of surprises, I'd probably say that it's colder than I expected.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

It is very welcoing, everyone is friendly. The students in higher years are always around to give you support if you need it, and people in general are easy to talk to and get along with.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

Meeting new people and experiencing things I probably wouldn't have to been able to if I hadn't come to Northumbria University.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

Seminar tutors are  really helpful. They go through everything from the lectures in more detail and make it easier to understand and they always make time after the class to go through anything that still isn't understood.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

Nicky Potts, one of my seminar tutors. She knows how to motivate us and has shown that we can achieve anything if we work hard enough.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Probably the SU. Drinks are cheap and everyone is there to have a laugh.

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?

I joined the Grey's Society for Law students. The social events are good and some of the events that are being planned sound good too. I'm hoping to get more into the sports side next year.

What is the best thing about your course?

I find it very interesting.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

To work hard and think of the end goal for motivation. Everyone is in the same boat so it can sometimes beneficial to help each other. Also, don't struggle - if you need it, ask for help.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I want to be a Solicitor. Everything I'm doing within my course is helping me to achieve that.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?

Not yet. I've done work experience before Univerisity, which was a good insight, and I'm planning on applying for a summer placement next year.

Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips? If so, please tell us about them.

Nothing has come about yet, but it's good to visit the courts on the Quayside. They are useful when looking at how to conduct yourself and they're good places to network.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Come and have a great time. These are the years and experiences you'll remember most. But also work hard because that's what will get you where you need to be in the end.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I've definitely become more confident and I've matured considerably since I've become more independent.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Wouldn't change anything!

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

Yes!
