What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will explore leadership and change and extend previous skills and knowledge to prepare you for working life and beyond.
You will be provided with the opportunity to explore leadership and change theory and identify and explore contemporary issues within physiotherapy. You will develop skills to enable employability and prepare you for working life. Reflection on your own learning and development will be engaged through the development of a self-selected project. The module will ‘bookend’ the programme to complete learning and development from a position of identifiable transferrable skills to that of the contextual insights required to be proficient at an entry level as a registered physiotherapist.

You will have the opportunity to reflect on the decision-making, communication, interpersonal and CPD skills developed across the programme along with the integration of core areas of physiotherapy practice to consider:

Leadership and management of change
Autonomous practice, learning and development
Employment and employability
Contemporary and emerging areas of physiotherapy practice and delivery
Service/quality improvement
Contemporary Health and Social Care Policy
Innovation and entrepreneurialism

How will I learn on this module?

The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats including lectures, seminars and workshops, and you will be able to access materials on the eLP. There will be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning. You will also be set independent tasks informed by key literature and health policy to complete outside of class time to further develop your understanding of the taught content. Guest contributors including healthcare innovators, employability experts and leaders in their field will add insight from specialist areas of experience and practice.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically discuss theories and models of leadership, innovation, change and quality improvement in the context of contemporary physiotherapy practice in order to critically examine the skills needed to improve and evaluate patient care
2. Discuss decision making and the impact of contextual factors on the role of the new graduate physiotherapist in managing practice.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
1. Critically reflect on the intellectual and professional skills required to enable change and progress within a physiotherapy setting

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
1. Critically reflect on personal and professional development and articulate readiness to practice as a graduate physiotherapist in relation to professional and regulatory bodies and employer expectations.
2. Critically reflect on your role within a team working towards quality improvement in healthcare

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment will be through development of your personal and professional portfolio and the opportunity to gain feedback from staff, peers and employers.

Summative assessment will be a 20-minute presentation and a ten minute viva on leadership, change and preparation for working life.

Written feedback will be provided on the presentation. In addition, group feedback will be posted on the eLP. You will have the opportunity to discuss your feedback with the module tutor.

Module abstract

The module will prepare you for future practice and enable you to embrace leadership and change within contemporary physiotherapy. This module will bookend the physiotherapy programme extending and developing your skills. You will have the opportunity to work with experts in employability and will be inspired by healthcare innovators and leaders. You will continue to develop your clinical reasoning and will progress on your journey to becoming an autonomous practitioner. The module will enable you to reflect on your development through the programme and inspire you to think about how you can make changes and lead with care.
